Dunbar Locks Up Fourth Defender of the Week Award

DANBURY, Conn. – Union College men's hockey junior Tyler Dunbar earned his fourth ECAC Hockey Adapt Nutrition Defender of the Week award, announced by the league office Monday morning.

Dunbar assisted on three of Union's nine goals during a shutout of Brown University on Saturday in the Opening Round of the ECAC Hockey Tournament. It marked the first three-assist game of his career and his third game this season with three or more points.

Dunbar's playmaking abilities earned him his league-leading fourth Defender of the Week award and helped the Garnet Chargers advance to the quarterfinals of the conference tournament for the third consecutive season. They will face Princeton University in a best-of-three series beginning on Friday, March 13 at 7 p.m. in Princeton, N.J.

Dunbar is one of two Hobey Baker award nominees on Union's roster, and he is third on the team in points with 33. He also has the third-most points among defenders in all of NCAA Division-I men's hockey, only trailing Air Force's Chris Hedden (34) and Denver's Eric Pohlkamp (36).

Defensively, Dunbar helped lead Union's defensive unit to its second shutout in a row and third shutout of Brown this season. The Bears only generated 22 shots as they were blanked by the Garnet Chargers for the third straight meeting. It is the first time Union has ever shut out an opponent three matchups in a row, and Dunbar's defense helped sophomore Cameron Korpi break the program's shutout streak record, going 153:48 without allowing a goal. Colin Stevens '15 went 140:40 without allowing a goal from Feb. 22 - March 15, 2014.
