TROY, N.Y. – The Union College men's crew team earned Liberty League Boat of the Week honors while both the baseball and men's lacrosse teams picked up another conference Rookie of the Week award to go with nine more Union student-athletes recognized with honor roll spots for the week ending April 19, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon.
Men's Crew Boat of the Week: Men's Novice 8+
Sophomore
Elizabeth Canaveral served as the coxswain for Union's frosh/novice 8+ boat, leading first-year

Thomas Unkles (bow). The boat finished in 7:18.94, beating out Merchant Marine by over 20 seconds for the gold medal at the New York State Championships on Saturday at Fish Creek.
Baseball Rookie of the Week: Alex Casey
Casey earned his second win of the season while pitching seven innings of one-run ball against Bard on Saturday. After Bard scored 11 runs in the first game of the doubleheader, Casey silenced the Raptor hitters in game two, allowing just six hits on his way to posting a 1.29 ERA in the game with three strikeouts. It marked Casey's third straight outing of six or more innings while allowing two or fewer runs.
Men's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week: Garrett Salit
Salit recorded five goals and three assists in two games for Union against nationally ranked foes last week. The first-year had a pair of assists in a 12-10 win over #15/20 Skidmore on Wednesday, including a helper on the eventual game-winning tally with 3:01 left in the fourth quarter. He followed up with a game-high five goals and six points on Saturday at #12/13 RIT, scoring four of the team's first seven goals to help the visitors get off to a good start.
Honor Roll Mentions:
Baseball: Jack Klein
Klein produced three scoreless innings in relief, posting a 1-0 record with seven strikeouts in two appearances. He struck out five of the seven batters he faced to earn the win over Middlebury on Wednesday, then pitched 1 1/3 innings in Union's Friday loss to Bard. He held the Raptors scoreless in the fifth and sixth to keep Union within striking distance on Friday after entering the game with the bases loaded and Union trailing 5-4.
Baseball: Dylan Swarts
Beginning in the ninth inning of Friday's game against Bard College, Swarts reached base safely in nine straight plate appearances spanning three games. He went 8-8 over that stretch with a home run, a double, six singles, one walk, and five RBIs. Over the course of Union's full 3-1 weekend, Swarts hit .611 (11-18) with two walks, two stolen bases, and six runs scored. He posted a 1.539 OPS, reaching base at a .650 clip along with two doubles and home run. His homer gave the Garnet Chargers a 2-1 lead in the top of the first against Bard and went 5-5 in the 15-11 win on Saturday to start the day. Swarts also closed out Union's road victory over Middlebury on Wednesday, earning the save on the mound.
Women's Lacrosse: Sami Bonasia
Bonasia combined for six goals on nine shots in Union wins over Bard and RIT last week, scoring a season-best four times in a 22-1 win over the Raptors on Tuesday and adding two more tallies on three attempts against the Tigers on Saturday.
Women's Lacrosse: Gillian Joseph
Joseph recorded 11 goals with four assists for 15 points in three games for Union last week. She started the week by scoring three goals with two assists playing just the first half in an eventual 22-1 win over Bard, then came back with five goals and two assists in the first three quarters of another lopsided victory over RIT on Friday. She added a game-high three goals as well in Saturday's matchup against #7 William Smith.
Women's Lacrosse: Lana Mickelson
Michelson led the Union defensive unit that allowed just 18 goals in three games last week, grabbing seven ground balls and causing six turnovers while controlling seven draws and adding eight points (3-5-8) as well. She recorded four ground balls and caused two turnovers on Wednesday against Bard, then chipped in two GBs and two CTs to go with three points and three draw controls in another lopsided win at RIT. The senior caused a pair of turnovers and had a ground ball and two goals on Saturday at #7 William Smith.
Women's Rowing: Women's Varsity 4+

Olivia Werkema (bow) won their heat of the Varsity 4+ race at the New York State Championships on Saturday with a time of 8:27.45. With Vandam guiding her squad through the water, Union beat out four Division I programs (Colgate, UAlbany, Binghamton and Stony Brook) for the top spot in the heat and a spot in the Grand Finals against Syracuse, Marist, Colgate, LIU and Canisius. Union raced against all D-I teams in the Grand Final and placed third with a time of 9:08.46.
Softball: Carra Cleaves
Cleaves went 1-1 with a 1.68 ERA and 13 strikeouts over 16.2 innings and three appearances in four Union games last weekend. She earned the win to start the day against Clarkson on Friday, allowing three earned runs on five hits over six innings to start the weekend. She tossed a combined 10.2 innings with only one earned run in two appearances versus St. Lawrence on Saturday, taking a hard-luck loss in game one despite conceding just two runs (one earned) while striking out eight in nine-plus innings.
Softball: Ellie Wintringer
Wintringer hit .429 (6 for 14) with three homers, four extra-base hits, five runs batted in and four runs scored in four games for Union over the weekend. She started the weekend with a homer and double in Friday's game-one win over Clarkson, then added her first career multi-homer game while driving in four runs during game two against the Golden Knights. The senior added another multi-hit game to start off the day against St. Lawrence on Saturday.
Women's Outdoor Track & Field: Ashley Sheldon
Sheldon broke her own school record in the 100-meter hurdles twice on Saturday at the Trinity Invitational, placing fifth in the event. After crossing the line in 15.00 seconds in the prelims to surpass her previous standard of 15.05, she raced to a time of 14.80 in the finals, placing her in the top-50 of Division III so far this season. The junior also went on to place third in the high jump with a season-best 1.58m leap.
