Cleaves and Wintringer Earn All-Liberty League Honors

TROY, N.Y. – Senior Ellie Wintringer and sophomore Carra Cleaves both were recognized for their excellent seasons leading the Union College softball team by earning All-Liberty League second-team honors, the conference office announced on Tuesday morning.

Wintringer picks up the second All-Conference honor of her career after earning honorable mention as a sophomore. The second baseman finished her collegiate career with her best season, hitting .407 (44 for 108) with 14 doubles, 26 runs batted in and 19 runs scored in 35 games (34 starts). She finished the season fifth in the Liberty League in batting average, fourth in OPS (1.123) and slugging percentage (.676), second in doubles, as well as top-10 in hits and home runs (5). The senior led the team with 13 multi-hit games and had a season-best 14-game hitting streak at one point, which was the longest for a Union player since 2014 and part of a team-leading stretch of 23 straight games reaching base. Her best day of the year came in the North Country, when she went a combined 4-for-7 with three homers, five RBIs and four runs scored in two games at Clarkson.

A four-year starter for Union, Wintringer finished her career as a .319 hitter with 36 doubles, 12 homers, 85 runs batted in and 58 runs scored in 127 games. She ends her four years 10th in career home runs and fourth in doubles all-time at Union, while just outside the top-10 in RBIs as well.

Cleaves had another successful season in the circle for Union, earning recognition for the second straight season after an honorable mention as a first-year. The sophomore went 9-10 with a 3.34 earned run average and 127 strikeouts in 128.0 innings of work, finishing with 14 complete games, two shutouts and a save in 22 appearances (19 starts). She finished the year as the Liberty League leader in strikeouts, strikeouts looking and complete games, while also finishing second in wins, shutouts and innings pitched, and also finished third on Union's single-season strikeouts list. She started the year with a dominant 14-strikeout shutout over Centenary on March 7, the most punchouts in a game by a Union hurler since 2014, and also had an impressive one-run, eight-strikeout win over eventual conference champion #25 Rochester in late April.

In her first two seasons in Schenectady, Cleaves is 17-16 with a 3.05 ERA and 217 strikeouts in 229.2 innings, already ranking seventh in program history in strikeouts with two years still to go.
