SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Following a three-year stint as head coach of the Union College women's golf program, Matt McPhillips has stepped down from his role to accept a new position with the PGA of America, Director of Athletics
Jim McLaughlin '93 announced this week.
"I am eternally grateful for the past three years at Union College and for Jim McLaughlin and Beth Tiffany for giving me the opportunity," McPhillips said. "Thank you also to the members of the women's golf team, past and present: your hard work and dedication make all the difference. This program is heading in the right direction and I'm excited to follow along. It's been an honor and I wish all of the student-athletes nothing but the best."
"We appreciate the time and knowledge that Matt has given to our women's golf student-athletes over the last three years," McLaughlin said. "The program has continued to progress in all areas under his guidance and is set up for more success in the coming years. Thank you to Matt for his dedication to the program and we wish him the best in his new role."
Over the span of his three seasons with the program, Union has recorded two of the top-three single-season scoring averages in program history, including a program-record average of 332.67 strokes per round in 2024-25, and earned a pair of top-four finishes at the Liberty League Championships. Seven of the top-10 single-round scores and six of the top-nine two-day scores in program history have come under his watch, while Union student-athletes picked up three All-Liberty League honors as well as the program's first Liberty League Rookie of the Year award.
McPhillips was named the Northeastern New York PGA Section Teacher and Coach of the Year for the 2024-25 season after the NENY PGA previously recognized him with their Player Development Award in 2022 and Professional Development Award in 2021.
A national search for the Union's next women's golf coach will begin soon.
