Box ScoreTroy, NY (Nov. 12, 2004) Union was involved in another offensive showdown and yielded the same result as they skated past cross-town rival RPI by a score of 5-4 in front of 3,415 at Houston Field House. Junior Scott Seney (Silver Spring, MD) scored two goals, including the game-winner, to snap a six-game winless streak against the Engineers. Union never trailed after striking first and held a two-goal lead twice during the game. RPI, with the home crowd behind them, was able to battle back and make things interesting toward the end, but the Dutchmen fought off the late attack and held on to improve to 3-4 overall and 3-0 in the ECACHL. Meanwhile, RPI falls to 5-4-1 and 1-2 in league play.
Union jumped out to an early lead with a goal by freshman Casey Ftorek (Bedford, MA) who stole the puck on a clearing attempt by the Engineers. Ftorek's shot inside the right face-off circle sailed past RPI goaltender Jordan Alford and into the back of the net at 2:46.
RPI took advantage of a power play opportunity to tie things up just over six minutes later. Matt McNeely found himself all alone at the point and blasted a shot past Union goaltender Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA) after taking a feed from Nick Economakos. The Engineers capitalized on three of its seven power play attempts on the night as Union continuously hurt themselves with penalties.
Union had its fair share of power play opportunities though, scoring its next two goals with the man advantage. Captain Jordan Webb (Nepean, ONT) struck first for the Dutchmen to cap off the first period scoring at 12:47 and break the 1-1 tie with his eighth goal of the season. Senior Joel Beal (Brantford, ONT) found his fellow classmate with a cross-ice pass in front of the net that Webb sent top shelf after setting himself to the left of Alford.
Seney's first goal gave Union its first two-goal lead of the game. Jonathan Poirier (St. Jerome, QUE) sent a pass from behind the net to Seney for the power play goal at 6:29 of the second period. After that RPI brought in Andrew Martin to replace the freshman netminder.
RPI came back to tie the game in the same period with a pair of power play goals from Andrew Lord and Kevin Croxton. The equalizer was Croxton's fifth goal of the season and came off a rebound after Mayotte made an initial save off of Kirk MacDonald's shot.
Just when momentum appeared to be shifting the way of the Engineers, Beal regained the lead for Union with 41 seconds left in the second period. Webb was able to return the favor with a centering pass after a start and stop move in the right face off circle to elude an RPI defender. Poirier's first shot attempt was saved by Martin but Beal was able to collect the loose puck and flick it by Martin.
Union came out and started the final period just as they ended the second as Seney's second goal came 37 seconds into the third. Josh Coyle (Brooklyn, OH) stayed with the puck to set up the play. After having his first shot denied, his second attempt went wide across the crease and just caught the edge of Seney's stick blade as he lunged forward to tip in the decisive goal.
Martin came back later in the period to prevent Union from putting the game away. He robbed Webb of his second goal of the night with a spectacular glove save, grabbing the puck out of the air at the last second off a one-time blast at the six minute mark.
The save provided RPI with a lift as the team mustered another comeback attempt. Nick Economakos scored off an assist from Kevin Croxton to once again make it a one-goal game at 10:30. The Engineers continued to harass Mayotte in an attempt to tie the game one more time. Union's goalie withstood the pressure though making back-to-back saves with just over four minutes to play off of chances by Oren Eizenman and Jake Morissette.
RPI came up with one last scoring chance at the end. With two seconds left Croxton faced Mayotte to the right of the goal, with an angle to the weak side. The shot sailed wide though and was cleared up ice as time expired.
Mayotte made 21 saves in the win, including 12 in the third period as he pulled even at 3-3. Martin made 10 saves in relief of Alford and suffered his third loss of the season as he fell to 3-3.
The rivalry continues tomorrow night at Messa Rink as Union looks to take two straight from RPI for the first time ever. The puck drops at 7:00 p.m. in what should prove to be an exciting encore.
