Ronan Promoted to Associate Head Men's Hockey Coach

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – John Ronan has been promoted to the role of associate head coach of the Union College men's hockey team ahead of the 2026-27 season, head coach Josh Hauge announced Wednesday.

The 2026-27 season will mark Ronan's 13th year as a coach for Union in total. Ronan served as a volunteer assistant coach during Union's 2013-14 national championship season, then rejoined the staff in a full-time capacity in 2016. He served as interim head coach of the program for the final 17 games of the 2021-22 season and has been the top assistant under Hauge over the last four years.

"John's promotion is a reflection of the tremendous impact he has had on our program," Hauge said. "He is a gifted coach, recruiter, and mentor who has been instrumental in the development of our student-athletes and the success of Union Hockey. His dedication, loyalty, and passion for our program make him incredibly deserving of this opportunity."

Since rejoining the program in 2016, Ronan has coached 15 all-conference players, including All-Americans Mike Vecchione '17 (2016-17), Spencer Foo '18 (2016-17), John Prokop '26 (2023-24), and rising senior Tyler Dunbar (2025-26).

During Hauge's tenure in Schenectady, Ronan has worked with him to produce Union's first winning season in four years in 2023-24 and the program's 11th 20+ win season after a 22-12-3 record in 2025-26.

With Ronan leading the power-play unit last season, the Garnet Chargers converted on 23.3 percent of their power plays, good for the 15th-best success rate in the nation. Over the last nine seasons with Ronan on staff, Union has averaged over 28 power-play goals per season, including four seasons with 30 or more man-up tallies.

Ronan will coach his first game as the associate head coach on Saturday, October 3 as Union opens up the 2026-27 season with a matchup at Army West Point.
