Schenectady, NY (Nov. 13, 2004) History was made tonight in front of a capacity crowd at Messa Rink as the Union College men's hockey team defeated RPI 3-2 to earn the first-ever sweep over its cross-town rival in a two-game series. Senior captain Jordan Webb (Nepean, ONT) also etched his name in the history books as he moved up to second on the Dutchmen's all-time Division I scoring list with a two-goal effort, giving him 97 career points to put him ahead of former player Chris Albert.
Union had to dig its way out of trouble early as they committed four penalties over the course of the opening period to give RPI four good scoring opportunities. The Engineers' could not get anything going though against a stingy Dutchmen penalty killing unit, who held RPI to just four total shots. Union managed nine shots in the first period but could not break through against goaltender Andrew Martin.  Â
Webb broke the silence in the second period with a pair of back-to-back power play goals to ignite the team and the crowd. His first would come off a tip-in from a Joel Beal (Brantford, ONT) shot between the face off circles inside the RPI zone at 1:54. Jonathan Poirier (St. Jerome, QUE) set up the play with a centering pass to the right side of the goal. The second tally came at 14:02 after receiving a pass behind the RPI net from Scott Seney (Silver Spring, MD). Webb came to Martin's left with a wrap around shot that snuck in on the near side to bring his season total to 10.Â
For the second straight game Union struck again late in the second period. With 53 seconds to go Olivier Bouchard (Quebec City, QUE) fired a one-timer off a draw won by Seney inside the Engineers zone. The shot between the face off circles found the back of the net as it sailed past Martin's left side for the eventual game-winner.
RPI did not go quietly though and scored two unanswered goals early in the third period to bring their fans to life. Kevin Broad recorded his third goal of the season off a two on one chance, lifting his shot over the left shoulder of Union goaltender Justin Mrazek (Regina, SASK). The Engineers exploited Mrazek's left side again at 3:59 when Andrew Lord tipped a pass from Nick Economakos past the Dutchmen netminder. Mrazek finished with 19 saves on the night and kept Union ahead with some quick glove work while RPI attempted its comeback.
RPI had a chance to tie the game at 11:35 when Kevin Croxton fired a shot from close range on the left side. He lifted it a little too high though as it hit the underside of the crossbar and deflected out to the opposite side of the ice where it was cleared by the defense.
A last ditch effort by the Engineers was wiped out with under a minute to play as they took two consecutive penalties. Economakos was sent to the penalty box for charging and was followed in by Cody Wojdyla who served a delay of game penalty on RPI. Union played keep away the rest of the way with a two-man advantage to secure the win.
Union pulled even at 5-5 overall and stand alone atop the ECACHL standings at 4-0, the team's first such start in history.
Union will have to keep its win streak alive on the road for a nine-game stretch and will look to do so next weekend when they begin at Princeton on November 19th at 7:00 p.m.    Â
