Seney Leads Union Tiger Hunt with First Career Hat Trick

Box Score

Princeton, NJ (Nov. 19, 2004) Union played catch up for most of the game but scored three goals in the third period to defeat Princeton 6-4 Friday night on the road at Hobey Baker Rink.  Junior Scott Seney (Silver Spring, MD) led the hunt against the Tigers with his first career hat trick to become just the 11th Union player in Division I history to score three goals in one game.  Union has matched its longest win streak at five games as they improve to 6-5 overall and remain undefeated in ECACHL play at 5-0.

Union controlled play early in the first period which led to some quality scoring chances but they were unable to crack Princeton goalie Eric Leroux.  He held off the Dutchmen long enough for his team to come away with the first goal of the game on the power play as penalties continue to plague Union.  Luc Paquin struck with his third goal of the season, off a slap shot from the point that sailed through traffic and past Union goaltender Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA) at 11:38.

Union nullified the advantage just under four minutes later when Seney scored his first goal of the game.  He stole the puck from a Princeton defender right in front of Leroux and sent a hard slap shot right through the legs of the Tigers netminder to even things up.

Princeton regained the lead early in the second period with a goal from Sebastian Borza at 4:09 as he finally broke through past Mayotte after two consecutive shots.  The Tigers had little time to celebrate though.  Union came right back twenty-five seconds later with Seney coming away with another goal.  Josh Coyle (Brooklyn, OH) set up the play with a great move behind the net that produced a wrap around opportunity for him that was picked up by Seney and put past Leroux.  The Tigers regained the lead once again at 15:15 of the second period when Neil Stevenson-Moore scored his first goal of the season with a slap shot from the point that made its way through traffic and past Mayotte.

Union started the third period in great position despite the score as Princeton took two penalties just before the end of the second period to give the Dutchmen a two-man advantage.  They capitalized just 23 seconds into the final period on Seney's third goal after he set himself up in front of the Princeton goal to the right of Leroux.  Senior Joel Beal (Brantford, ONT) had his shot blocked but the puck found its way to Seney who stuffed it home.

Coyle gave the Dutchmen their first lead of the game at 4:26 with his fourth goal of the season off a defensive turnover.  On a tic-tac-toe play, the freshman took a pass across the crease from Olivier Bouchard (Quebec City, QUE) and slammed it past Leroux.  Bouchard made it a two-goal lead at 14:59.

Princeton pulled within one as Dustin Sproat scored a power play goal at 15:56.  Bouchard added an empty net goal for Union to seal up the win.

Union was just 1-of-6 on the power play while Princeton finished off three of its six opportunities.  Mayotte made 24 saves for his fourth win of the season while Leroux made 32 saves in the loss.

The Dutchmen look to make it six-in-a-row when they travel to Yale for a Saturday showdown with a 7:00 p.m. faceoff.
