Box ScoreNew Haven, CT (Nov. 20, 2004) Union made it six in a row with a 5-2 win over Yale Saturday evening in men's hockey action at Ingalls Rink. Senior Jordan Webb (Nepean, ONT) scored the game-winning goal on the power play at 4:55 of the second period and added an assist on the Dutchmen's fourth goal of the game. Webb leads the nation in power play goals with eight as his team tied its longest overall win streak to improve to 7-5-0 and is off to its best start in the ECACHL at 6-0.
Union got on the board first when Scott Brady (Sutton, MA) scored his first career goal at 7:24 of the opening period. Brady tipped in a shot from A.J. Palkovich (North Bellmore, NY) past Yale goaltender Josh Gartner, who was screened by traffic in front of the net.
After not surrendering a single short-handed goal yet this season, Yale was able to score twice against Union during the penalty kill. The first tally came from Zachary Mayer to tie the game in the waning seconds of the first. Meyer stole the puck and broke in on a breakaway, lifting a shot over Union goaltender Justin Mrazek (Regina, SASK) that glanced off the crossbar and in. The Bulldogs took advantage of another defensive breakdown by the Dutchmen at the 15:54 mark of the second period when Christian Jensen, in almost an identical play from before, stole the puck and raced in on Mrazek, lifting his shot over the freshman netminder's right shoulder.
Mayer's game-tying goal did not hold up for very long. Union's Casey Ftorek (Bedford, MA) regained the lead just 16 seconds later as he took what appeared to be a harmless shot just to get the puck towards the goal. Gartner misplayed the puck though and it snuck behind him to the surprise of the 3,028 in attendance and commenced a three-goal scoring spree by the Dutchemen.
Webb extended the lead with his 11th goal of the season as he forced a shot in net just to the left of Gartner off a feed from behind the net by Jonathan Poirier (St. Jerome, QUE). Poirier would seal the win with an empty net, power play goal at 19:44 of the third period.
Palkovich scored Union's fourth goal of the game just under eight minutes after Webb's tally, who set the wheels in motion with a long pass up the ice to Michael Beynon (Nepean, ONT). The freshman brought the puck in from the neutral zone and carried it around the boards, behind the Yale goal, with a defender bearing down on him. He emerged from behind the net and sent a pass across the front of the crease to set up Palkovich with a blistering one-timer.
Union finished 3-of-9 on the power play while keeping Yale at bay in five of its attempts. The Dutchmen also held a 32-25 advantage in shots.
Mrazek finished with 23 saves for his third win of the season while Gartner came up with 27 stops in the loss.
Up next Union will face Merrimack in the opener of the Dunkin' Donuts Coffee Pot, hosted by Providence College, on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
