Union Unbeaten Streak Halted against Holy Cross

Box Score

Providence, RI (Nov. 28, 2004) Union was unable to extend its unbeaten streak to eight games as they were defeated by Holy Cross 3-1 in the consolation game of the Dunkin' Donuts Coffee Pot held at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, RI.  The Dutchmen fall to 7-6-1 on the season, while the Crusaders improved to 4-5-3.

Holy Cross went up first at 3:36 of the first period when Sean Nappo stuffed home a rebound in front of Union goaltender Justin Mrazek (Regina, SASK) with an assist to captain Andrew McKay.  Union had a chance to come up with the tie toward the end of the period but a shot by the Dutchmen slid harmlessly across the crease behind Holy Cross goaltender Ben Conway.

The score remained the same after the second period, but it did not end without a couple quality opportunities from the Dutchmen.  With just under three minutes left Union put Conway to work.  Freshman Casey Ftorek (Bedford, MA) suffered a broken stick as he was ready to fire a one-timer off a pass by Olivier Bouchard (Quebec City, QUE).  Ftorek's stick broke with a wide open net in front of him which allowed an easy save by Conway as the puck fluttered right to him.  Seconds later Scott Seney (Silver Spring, MD) laced a shot in front of the net to Conway's right side.  The netminder was again able to smother the puck though and keep Union off of the scoreboard.

Union's persistence paid off in the third period with Phil McDavitt (Duxbury, MA) getting his second goal in as many games to tie things up at 9:22.  The freshman took a shot just inside the Holy Cross zone that was partially tipped up into the air.  The puck floated up over everyone, including Conway, and found its way into the net just under the crossbar.  McDavitt took a tripping penalty though at 16:15 that led to a Crusaders power play tally.

McKay added his second goal of the game, picking up a loose puck in front of Mrazek and having plenty of time to send a wrist shot in past the freshman goalie.

Tyler McGregor tacked on an empty net goal with 54 seconds left to seal up the win for Holy Cross.

Mrazek made 23 saves in the loss while Conway recorded 32.

Union will look to recover when they travel to Massachusetts to face Harvard on Friday, November 3rd at 7:00 p.m.
