Union Tops #13 St. Lawrence 6-5 in League Opener

Box Score

Schenectady, NY (Nov. 5, 2004) Union made some early noise in its ECACHL opening game by upsetting #13 St. Lawrence 6-5 at Messa Rink Friday evening in front of a vibrant crowd of 1,998.  The Dutchmen played catch-up for most of the game after falling down by two goals early in the game, but they were able to battle back and take the lead with three goals in the third period.  Goaltender Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA) made 42 saves to earn the decision for the Dutchmen who improved to 2-5-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the conference with their third straight win over the Saints.

Union fell behind in the first period after two quick strikes by St. Lawrence made it a 2-0 game.  Mark Wallmann was able to get a fluttering shot past Mayotte on the left side at the 6:00 mark.  Chase Trull scored the Saints second goal 24 seconds later to silence the home crowd and shock the home team.  Jim Hakewill caused the goal with a hard shot that rebounded off of Mayotte's stick right to Trull who fired it home.

Just over two minutes later senior Jordan Webb (Nepean, ONT) answered for Union to get them on the scoreboard and make it a one-goal game.  Webb picked up a loose puck in the St. Lawrence zone and snuck a shot by Mike McKenna for the power play goal.  Union tied the game at 13:06 with another power play goal coming from Jonathan Poirier (St. Jerome, QUE).  Scott Seney (Silver Spring, MD) set up the play as he held the puck behind the Saints net and fired a strike to Poirier, who got into position in front of McKenna.

In the second period St. Lawrence regained the lead on a power play goal by Jim Hakewill at 8:59.  Hakewill took a bad angled shot from the right side of Mayotte that just caught the inside of the far post and ricocheted in.

With just over three minutes to play before the end of the second period Olivier Bouchard (Quebec City, QUE) made the score even at three with his second goal of the season.  Bouchard fired up the crowd with the goal as he laced his shot from the face off circle to the left of McKenna, who had no chance on the save.

Whatever Union talked about in the locker room during the second intermission seemed to take effect as the Dutchmen reeled off three unanswered goals during the final period to take a commanding 6-3 lead.  Senior Brian Kerr (Kirkland, QUE) capped off the Dutchmen scoring spree at 6:38 with his second goal of the season after making a spectacular move to free himself of the defender and catching the inside of the far post to beat McKenna.

Following Union's sixth goal St. Lawrence head coach Joe Marsh had seen enough and pulled McKenna to replace him with Justin Pesony.

St. Lawrence kept things interesting until the end with a pair of late goals from Mike Madill and Max Taylor, who scored unassisted as the Saints pulled Pesony in favor of an extra attacker.  Taylor took advantage of a crowd in front of Mayotte and sent the puck to the netminder's right side as he was screened from the play.

Kerr's goal would prove to be the difference though as Mayotte withstood a late flurry of shots from the Saints to pick up the win.

Union will host Clarkson tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. to wrap up a six-game homestand.
