Penalties plague Union in loss at Wayne State

Box Score

Plymouth, MI (Dec. 11, 2004) After battling back from a pair of one-goal deficits Union took its first lead of the game in the second period. The Warriors scored two power play goals in the third period though to hand Union a 4-3 loss Saturday afternoon at Compuware Sports Arena to wrap up the two-game series. Penalties plagued the Dutchmen throughout the contest as they were whistled for 13 infractions that added up to 45 minutes and led to a few five on three opportunities for the Warriors.

Once again Wayne State struck first, even though Union opened the game with six unanswered shots on goal. Jason Bloomingburg picked up a rebound and lifted the puck over Justin Mrazek (Regina, SASK) for his tenth goal of the season.

Union came back to tie the game on a goal by Olivier Bouchard (Quebec City, QUE) who picked up his seventh goal. Freshman Michael Beynon (Nepean, ONT) sent the puck into Bouchard who was positioned to the right of Wayne State goalie Will Hooper. Bouchard was in a tough position to receive the puck and as he turned to take the pass had the puck deflect off his skate and redirect into the net past Hooper.

Wayne State regained the lead at 7:19 of the second period with a goal from Derek Bachynski. Mrazek came out to play the puck that drifted into Union's zone with Bachynski in pursuit. The freshman goaltender fanned on the clearing attempt and Bachynski gained control, coming around the back of the net and stuffing home a wrap around shot.

Union tied the score again, this time with a power play goal by Jason Visser (Mississauga, ONT) for his second goal in as many games. Junior Scott Seney (Silver Spring, MD) sent a cross ice pass in the Wayne State zone to Visser who was streaking in on net and connected on a quick one-timer shot past Hooper on the left side.

The Dutchmen gained their first lead of the game about five minutes later with Scott Brady (Sutton, MA) getting in on the action. He received a pass from Sam Bowles (Davidsonville, MD), who was behind the net, and roofed his shot over Hooper.

Jason Bloomingburg tied the game on the power play with his second goal just 28 seconds into the third period. He fired a one-timer from the top of the left face off circle after taking a feed from the point by Dan Iliakis. Bloomingburg connected to the far post past Mrazek who was screened on the play.

Wayne State capitalized on the power play to take its third lead of the game. Nate Higgins scored with a shot from the left side taking a feed from the point by Steve Kovalchik. This lead would stand though. Union pulled Mrazek with more than a minute to play and applied the pressure on Hooper, but the sophomore netminder stood strong with several saves.

Mrazek finished with 24 saves for Union while Hooper came away with 32.

Union does not return to action until after the New Year when they conclude its nine-game road trip at Connecticut on Sunday, January 2nd at 3:00 p.m.
