Union Handed First Loss in League Play

Box Score

Cambridge, MA (Dec. 3, 2004) Union's undefeated record in ECACHL play came to an end as they fell to Harvard by a 4-1 score Friday evening at the Bright Hockey Center.  The Crimson built a three-goal lead going into the final period.  Union was able to cut into that lead but could not get any closer than two as Harvard held off the Dutchmen attack the rest of the way.  It was Union's seventh straight loss against Harvard as they fall to 7-7-1 on the season and 6-1 in league play.

Unlike the previous two meetings Harvard was able to get on the board first at 17:11 of the first period courtesy of a Tom Cavanagh goal, who capitalized off a Union turnover in their defensive zone.  Alex Meintel stole the puck and sent a pass behind the Union goal to Andrew Lederman who found Cavanagh unmarked in front of the goal for the strike past Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA) who finished with 26 saves.

Harvard managed to add two more goals to its total in the second period beginning with Ryan Maki's first goal of the season.  On a delayed penalty Maki, with very little room, was able to sneak the puck past Mayotte on his left side.  Union created some scoring chances to try and get back into the game but could not crack Harvard goalie Dov Grumet-Morris who finished with 32 saves.  With 11:40 left to play Jordan Webb (Nepean, ONT) fired a shot from the left face-off circle that sailed just wide.  The Dutchman came at the Crimson netminder again three minutes later when Jake Schwan (Clifton Park, NY) caught a centering pass as he crashed the net and fired a shot, but Grumet-Morris was able to smother the puck.

Harvard rewarded its goaltender by making it a three-goal game when Dylan Reese came through at 3:16 to wrap up second-period scoring.  Reese received a centering pass from Maki and sent a shot in on the left side past Mayotte who was sliding over to attempt the save.

Down, but not out, Union broke into the scoring column at 17:03 of the third period.  Freshman Sam Bowles (Davidsonville, MD) got his first goal of the season, firing a shot from the point that beat Grumet-Morris to the right side and make it a 3-1 game.

Union continued to apply the pressure but without any more results.  Cavanagh sealed the win for the Crimson with an empty net goal at 18:50.

Union held a slight advantage in shots, 33-30, but it was Harvard who capitalized on defensive turnovers to hand the Dutchmen their second straight loss.  Brown now awaits Union for a 7:00 p.m. meeting tomorrow night at Meehan Auditorium.
