Schenectady, N.Y. (February 7, 2004) - - Union College (11-13-4, 5-9-2) rallied from a 2-0 deficit after one period to defeat St. Lawrence (10-16-4, 6-9-1) by the score of 3-2 in ECAC action at Messa Rink Saturday night. The win, Union"s third consecutive, came in front of 1,759 fans on a night the Dutchmen honored the 1983-84 Hockey Team that skated to the Division III National title game.
Junior Jordan Webb (Nepean, Ontario) scored two goals, including the game winner with 1:31 remaining in the third period, and picked up an assist to lead the way for Union. Sophomore Jason Visser (Mississauga, Ontario) and senior Brent Booth (Calgary, Alberta) picked up assists on the game-winner. Webb now has 10 goals and 12 assists on the season, tops in points for the Dutchmen at 22 for the season. Sophomore Matt Blabac (Florida, NY) scored his second goal of the season at 8:10 of the second period to get Union with in one goal at 2-1. Freshman Jason Ortolano (Corteret, NJ) and Webb picked up assists on the goal.
Senior Rich Peverley (Guelph, Ontario) opened the game"s scoring with an unassisted power play goal at 9:47 of the first, and sophomore T.J. Trevelyan added a tally at 17:03 to put the Saints up 2-0 heading to the first intermission. Sophomore John Zeiler (Jefferson Hills, Pennsylvania) and Peverley picked up assists on the Trevelyan goal.
Sophomore goaltender Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) made 23 saves to improve to 8-12-4 on the season for Union. St. Lawrence junior Mike McKenna made 26 saves in the loss, dropping his record to 5-5-1. The Dutchmen were 2-5 on the power play while the Saints capitalized on two of six opportunities. Union out shot St. Lawrence 29-25.
With the victory the Dutchmen moved ahead of Princeton in the ECAC standings and now stand just two points out of eighth place and the league"s final home-playoff spot with six games remaining. Union will return to action next weekend at league-leading Brown and seventh place Harvard before returning home to face Colgate and Cornell on February 20 and 21.
