Dutchwomen open 2004 season with Florida sweep, 13-0 and 5-3

Box Score

FORT MYERS, FLAbbie Arceneaux tossed a complete-game two-hit shutout in the first game of a double header and used her bat in both games as Union opened its season with a five-inning, mercy-rule shortened 13-0 win over Kalamazoo. The Dutchwomen defeated Lawrence, 5-3, to complete the sweep.

The Dutchwomen, who won 26 games last year and played in their first-ever NCAA tournament, exploded for 13 runs on 15 hits and did not make a fielding error in the opener. Arceneaux, who fanned seven and did not walk a batter, helped her own cause as she drove in three runs with a pair of doubles.

In the nitecap, the sophomore from Mechanicville, New York, contributed two hits and scored twice to support the seven-hit pitching of classmate Jackie Coffey. Coffey, who also did not walk a batter, fanned five while giving up seven hits.

Sophomore Caitlin DelZotto contributed two doubles, a single and three rbis in the opener, then added an rbi double in the nitecap. Classmate Colleen White plated three runners with two doubles and a single in the first game while sophomore Julie Gawronski collected a two-run double in the second contest.
