Box ScoreCANTON, NY--Sophomore Abby Areceneaux pitched a two-hitter with seven strikeouts to shut out St. Lawrence 4-0 in the first game of an Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association softball doubleheader Saturday.
In the second game, classmate Jackie Coffey pitched six innings of shutout ball before the Saints broke through for a run as the Dutchwomen completed the sweep with a 7-1 win.
Union improves to 15-3 overall and 3-1 in the UCAA while the Saints are now 10-8 overall and 1-3 in league competition.
Arceneaux, who improves to 8-1, has not allowed a run in the last 28 innings and has tossed five shutouts this season.
Union took advantage of Saint errors for all of its scoring in the opener, scoring singles runs in the first, second, fourth and fifth. Colleen White went two for three and drove in a run for the Dutchwomen. Meanwhile, Ashley Porter and Erin Lloyd had the only hits for the Saints off Areceneaux.
Union broke open a scoreless duel between Coffey and Saint first year pitcher Ava Pickering when it scored two in the fourth on a double by Caitlin DelZotto and an outfield error and then added five runs in the fifth to take a 7-0 lead. DelZotto finished with two doubles and three runs driven in while Beth Carcone also had a pair of hits for Union.
The Saints scored their lone run off Coffey in the bottom of the seven when King singled and scored on Laura Emilo's double.
Coffey improves to 7-2 on the season with both of her losses coming by the score of 2-1.
