UNION 7, New Paltz 5

NEW PALTZ, N.Y.--Union built a 6-1 lead after four and a half innings and held off SUNY New Paltz for a 7-5 win in a non-league baseball contest.

The Dutchmen got a two-run homer from senior Jim Griglun in the top of the first to highlight a three-run inning. Union, now 10-11, added three more in the top of the fifth off New Paltz starter Marc Smith to take a five-run lead into the bottom of the sixth.

Trailing 6-1, the Hawks pushed home a run in the bottom of the sixth and then moved a run closer on an RBI single by sophomore Blake Crocitto in the bottom of the seventh.

Junior Mike Flanagan homered in the ninth to complete a 2-for-5, two RBI day and put Union ahead 7-3. New Paltz (12-22-1) scored twice in the bottom of the ninth and brought the tying run to the plate before Union sophomore Eric Mapplethorpe retired the Hawks to end the game.
