White's grand slam leads Union to a sweep over UCAA rival Skidmore

Box Score

Freshman second basewoman Colleen White belted her first collegiate grand slam in the top of the eighth inning to help Union defeat homestanding Skidmore, 6-2, in the first game of an Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader. The second game saw Jackie Coffey hurl her fourth shutout of the season as the Dutchwomen completed the sweep with a 5-0 victory.

The two wins gives the Dutchwomen a 7-1 UCAA record and a 21-3 overall standard. It marks the fourth time in the last five year that the Dutchwomen have reached the 20-win plateau. The win also gives seventh-year head coach Peter Brown a career record of 151-75-1, which makes Brown the winningest coach in the program's 29-year history.

White, whose only hit was the bases-clearing round-tripper, made a winner of Abby Areceneaux, who is now 11-1 on the season. Arceneaux fanned 14 and did not give up an earned run.

Sophomore catcher Beth Carcone and classmate shortstop Beth Carcone also had run-scoring hits for the Dutchwomen in the top of the eighth.

The second game saw Coffey up her career record to 21-2 as she hurled a three-hit shutout. Coffey has won her last three games by the score of 5-0. Both of her losses this season have come by the score of 2-1.

Sophomore outfielder Julie Gawronski had three hits, including a triple, and drove in a pair of runs while Elise Nichols drove in the other run for the Dutchwomen. Coffey, who contributed a pair of hits to the Dutchwomen's nine-hit attack, struck out three and walked only one.
