Pitchers dominate as Dutchwomen split with Rensselaer in UCAA opener

Box Score

TROY, NYThe pitchers dominated as Union and Rensselaer split their Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association softball doubleheader. Sophomore Abby Arceneaux bested Rensselaer freshman Nikki Dooley as the Dutchwomen won the opener, 1-0. The nitecap, however, belonged to the Red Hawks' Amy Huling as she bested Dutchwoman sophomore Jackie Coffey, 2-1.

The split left both teams with a 1-1 conference record and the Dutchwomen with a 13-3 overall standard. Rensselaer is 12-5.

Arceneaux picked up her seventh win of the season and extended the Dutchwomen's win streak to nine-straight as she tossed as she scattered seven hits while fanning two. It was the Mechanicville native's fifth shutout of the season and extended her current scoreless streak to 21 consecutive innings. She has not allowed a run since giving up the game-winning tally to Wisconsin Whitewater in the last of the seventh on March 26.

Julie Gawronski provided Arceneaux with the only run she needed in the top of the second when she slammed her fourth home run of the season.

Coffey, who pitched a five-inning no-hitter in her last outing (losing a perfect game in the last of the fifth when a one-out infield fly was dropped), saw her record slip to 6-2 despite giving up just five hits. The Red Hawks scored two runs (one of which was earned) in the last of the fourth on hits by Kathy Valenta and Huling. It marked the second time this year that Coffey was beaten by a 2-1 score.

Stephanie Rubin drove in Erika Eisenhut with the Dutchwomen's lone run in the third.
