Clarkson gets by Union, 3-2, in UCAA Tournament showdown

Potsdam, NY Freshmen David Potter and Darrell Carey combined to allow just one hit over nine innings as the Clarkson University baseball team opened the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) Tournament with a 3-2 win over Union Friday afternoon at Clarkson's Snell Field.

(Note: Earlier in the day junior outfielder Adam Chadwick was voted to the UCAA All-Conference first team while senior first baseman Jim Griglun and classmate catcher Dan Mehleisen were both selected to the second team).

The Golden Knights, the top seed in the tournament, improved to 19-15 on the season while fourth-seeded Union dropped to 15-19. The Golden Knights will face #3 seed Rensselaer at 12:30 pm Saturday in the winners' bracket and Union will play #2 seed Rochester in an elimination game at 9:30 am Saturday. The Red Hawks defeated the Yellowjackets, 11-3.

Potter pitched seven-plus strong innings, allowing only a run-scoring single by Dan Mehleisen in the sixth inning. Union scored its first run in the fourth inning on three errors by the Golden Knights.

Clarkson opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning on a two-run single by Stefan Casey, which scored Chad Sydor and Tom Lilienthal.

The Golden Knights' winning tally came in the bottom of the seventh inning after Union had come back to tie the score.

Junior Giovan Scialdone's eighth double of the season scored Brandon Barcombfrom second base.

Potter finished with seven strikeouts and walked five over seven and two-thirds innings. Carey came in to earn his first collegiate save by working the final one and one-thirds innings, striking out two.

David Masi was the loser for the Dutchmen, giving up only six hits over six-plus innings while striking out two.
