Big second inning supports Giovannone's pitching as Union defeats Rochester, 6-0

MASSENA, N.Y.Freshman pitcher Eric Giovannone pitched a complete-game six-hit shutout and Mike Flanagan highlighted a six-run second inning with a two-run triple as Union defeated the University of Rochester, 6-0, in an Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament at Clarkson. The Dutchmen, who lost their opener to the top-seeded Golden Knights, 3-2, on Friday (May 7).

Giovannone, who struck out six, improved his record to 4-2 while tossing his first collegiate shutout.

The win enabled the Dutchmen to avenge their two regular-season losses to the Yellowjackets. Rochester, which was seeded second and ends the season at 25-10, beat Union 8-6 and 14-6 on April 25.

Adam Chused, Kyle Murphy, Ben Brown and Dan Mehleisen all drove in runs during the Dutchmen's decisive inning. Chused and Adam Chadwick each had two hits for Union while Cliff Eisenhut contributed a double.
