Clarkson knocks Union out of the UCAA Tourney, 8-2

Potsdam, NY Junior Giovan Scialdone went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run and a two-run single to lead the Clarkson University Baseball team to an 8-2 win over Union in an Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) Tournament elimination game Saturday afternoon at Snell Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 20-16 overall and will play Rensselaer in the UCAA Championship round at noon on Sunday. Clarkson lost to RPI earlier in the day, 12-4. The Dutchmen dropped to 16-20 overall.

Clarkson opened the scoring in the second inning when John Smith scored on a wild pitch. Mike Onisk took home when Tom Lilientha was caught in a run down in a steal attempt.

The Dutchmen rallied to score in similar fashion in the top of the third inning. Dan Mehleisen scored when Adam Chused was picked off on an early steal attempt. Jim Griglun later drove home Adam Chadwick to tie the game 2-2.

The Golden Knights scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning with a two-run single from Scialdone and a two-run double to center field by Smith, who had three hits. Scialdone's two-run home run in the seventh finished the scoring for Clarkson.

Nick Huffman won his fifth game of the season, scattering eight hits and striking out seven over nine innings. He allowed six hits in the first three innings, but settled down and held Union hitless in the final four innings.
