Box ScoreSchenectady, NY (Jan. 14, 2005) Cornell scored a shorthanded goal with 1:52 remaining in overtime to upend Union 2-1 Friday evening in front of a lively crowd at Messa Rink. It was the seventh shorthanded goal given up by the Dutchmen this season and proved to be the most costly up to this point. Senior Mike Iggulden was able to sneak the puck past Union goaltender Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA) on a breakaway following a Dutchmen turnover in the Big Red zone. Mayotte finished with 22 saves on the night. The loss was Union's second in four games as they drop to 10-11-1 overall and 7-4 in the league.
Cornell controlled play early on, holding the puck in Union's zone for the first four minutes of the game. The Dutchmen were able to clear the zone once during the stretch for a two second span before the Big Red regrouped and brought the puck back in. Union settled into the game after that and the two teams went back and forth the rest of the way.
Union's first good scoring chance came with 8:20 left in the first period when Olivier Bouchard (Quebec City, QUE) got a shot off right in front of the Cornell net, but goaltender David McKee was able to smother the puck. The Dutchmen connected though with three seconds left on a tip-in shot by Jason Visser (Mississauga, ONT). The junior was able to redirect the puck past McKee off a shot by Matt Vagvolgyi (Milford, CT) from the right face-off circle.
Cornell answered on the power play at 15:43 of the second period with the help of a fortunate bounce. Junior Matt Moulson's shot ricocheted off the crossbar, bounced off the back of Mayotte's shoulder and in. The netminder could only fall back in an attempt to cover the puck after that but the damage was already done. The Big Red were denied a go-ahead goal by Mayotte at 18:58, who made a shoulder save off a shot from Paul Varteressian from the right face-off circle.
Neither team got a shot off in the third period to send the game into overtime. Union was whistled for a penalty at 19:04 of the final period for too many men on the ice to give Cornell a power play heading into the extra session. The Dutchmen were able to kill off the penalty and the tide appeared to turn in Union's favor when a holding penalty was called on the Big Red at 2:16. It would be Cornell who benefited though, capitalizing with just over a minute to go for the game-winner. Iggulden collected the loose puck and raced down ice on the breakaway. He faked to his left before coming back over to his right and tucked the shot across the goal line just ahead of Mayotte's blocker.
McKee finished with 26 saves on the night in his 10th win of the season.
Union came up empty on the power play in seven attempts while Cornell finished with one goal on six tries.
Union will host Colgate tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m.
