Box ScoreCanton, NY (Jan. 22, 2005) Union suffered its fourth straight loss for the second time this season, falling to St. Lawrence 7-3 at Appleton Arena. The Dutchmen also dropped four in a row to start the season. The Saints led by just two goals heading into the final period, but put up three in the third to seal the game. Union is now 10-14-1 overall and 7-7 in the ECACHL, including a 1-7 mark over its last eight league games.
Both goalies were pressured from the start. Mike Madill fired a shot from the right side that was deflected just wide of goal in the first period. Union came back on the counter attack with a shot from the same spot on the opposite end by Jason Ortolano (Carteret, NJ) that tipped off of Justin Pesony's glove and slid toward goal before being saved by a couple of crashing defenders.
Union was finally able to end its scoring drought with a short handed goal by Jordan Webb (Nepean, ONT) at 4:07. The senior captain registered his 13th of the season with a shot from the same spot as Ortolano's a couple minutes earlier that deflected off Saint's defender Drew Bagnall and caught the inside of the far post. The drought lasted 167:19, the longest in Division I history.
Saint Lawrence was able to tie the game up on the power play just under four minutes later. T.J. Trevelyan scored his 16th goal of the season, going top shelf on Union goaltender Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA) off a lead pass from John Zeiler. It appeared the Dutchmen regained the lead at 15:27 on a goal by Jason Visser (Mississauga, ONT) but it was ruled that the junior kicked the puck past Pesony.
Some nice footwork by Mayotte kept the score tied with less than a minute to play before the first intermission. Jim Hakewill took a cross-ice pass at the back post and fired a one-timer as Mayotte slid over in time to stop it with his right blocker.
The teams picked up the intensity to start the second period, resulting in a couple odd-man rushes for both. It would be Union coming through with the go-ahead goal on the power play though at 6:55. Freshman Phil McDavitt (Duxbury, MA) fired a shot from the point that found its way into the net after being deflected off a defenders skate.
St. Lawrence came back to tie things up again at 14:07 on the power play. After Union cleared its zone Pesony sent a quick pass back up ice and caught the Dutchmen on a line change. Stace Page received the puck at the blue line and broke in on net, sneaking the puck past Mayotte who got a piece of it but not enough to keep it out of the net.
The Saints took their first lead of the game at 19:16. Page scored his second goal with a shot between his legs and his back to the net that got by Mayotte who appeared to get tied up with a St. Lawrence player.
The games first even strength goal came with one second left in the second period to give St. Lawrence a two-goal advantage. Drew Bagnall fired a shot from the point, through traffic, that ricocheted off the inside of the right post and rang home. The pass came from Adam Hogg.
Freshman Justin Mrazek (Regina, SASK) replaced Mayotte in goal to start the third period. Things did not get any better for the Dutchmen. The Saints added two more goals in the first four and a half minutes to put the game away. Page scored his third goal of the game after Union turned the puck over in its zone. The senior shot the puck off a pass from Max Taylor. Mrazek got a piece of it, knocking it up in the air. He lost sight of the puck as it fell behind him and trickled in. Taylor added another tally at 4:19.
Sean Streich (Kimberley, BC) scored on a turnaround shot in front of the Saints' goal that beat Pesony to the left side at 11:32 for Union's third goal of the game but that was as close as the Dutchmen got.
St. Lawrence outshot Union 34-27 for the game. Mayotte finished with 20 saves in his first career loss against the Saints. Pesony made 24 saves in the win.
Union continues league play on the road in a two-game set beginning at Dartmouth on Friday, January 21st at 7:00 p.m.
