Union Falls Prey to Catamount Attack, 7-1

Box Score

Burlington, VT (Jan. 29, 2005) Union allowed seven goals in a game for the second time in three contests as they fell to Vermont by a 7-1 tally for their sixth straight loss. The Dutchmen made several errant passes that resulted in turnovers and allowed the Catamounts to capitalize on a couple of those opportunities. As a result Union falls to 10-16-1 overall and 7-9 in the ECAC.

The Catamounts pounced on Union with three goals in the first period due in part to a suffocating defense that caused turnovers in the Dutchmen zone and would lead to two of those scores. Union surrendered its eighth short handed goal of the season that allowed Vermont to open up scoring. The goal came off a turnover in Vermont's zone as Slavomir Tomko sent a pass up ice to Joey Gasparini who skated in alone on net and shot the puck high past Justin Mrazek (Regina, SASK) from the right face-off circle.

Union was able to counter with its own short handed chance but was denied by Vermont goalie Travis Russell when he stopped Brian Kerr's (Kirkland, QUE) chance in front. Vermont got its second goal of the game at 13:36 after Torrey Mitchell also went high on Mrazek with a shot between the face-off circles. Scott Misfud worked to free himself behind the Union goal and centered the puck into the slot to a waiting Mitchell. Mifsud caused the third goal, gaining control of the puck off another Dutchmen turnover in their zone and sending a pass in front to Jeff Corey who scored his 12th goal of the season.

Union came out in the second period and managed to get on the board to make it a 3-1 game. Olivier Bouchard (Quebec City, QUE) scored his ninth goal of the season with a shot in front of the net that caught the inside of the left post and bounced past Russell at 6:03. Bouchard's goal was set up by Josh Coyle (Brooklyn, OH) with a centering pass from the right side.

Vermont responded with three unanswered, including two on the power play, to make it a 6-1 game. Matt Syroczynski got things started when he snuck a shot under Mrazek in front of the goal off a feed from Mifsud at 14:24. Mrazek was replaced in goal by Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA) following the fourth Catamount goal. Mayotte would not fair much better as he surrendered two goals. Less than 20 seconds later Andy Corran scored with a wide open shot at the far post. Vermont would get its second power play goal of the period from Mifsud at 18:10, catching the upper corner of the far post.

Mrazek went back in goal for Union to start the third period. Vermont was able to add to the lead though when Tim Plant intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and scored on a breakaway opportunity at 10:18.

Vermont outshot Union 34-25 for the game, including a 16-7 advantage in the second period.

Mrazek made 26 saves for the Dutchmen in the loss while Russell came up with 22 for the win.

Union has little time to recuperate as they return to action at home against Harvard on Tuesday, February 1st at 7:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on Time Warner Cable local access Ch. 3.
