Box ScoreSchenectady, NY (Feb. 4, 2005) Whatever Union talked about during its 64 minute closed door meeting following Tuesday's loss against Harvard took effect as they defeated Holy Cross 4-2 at Messa Rink to snap a seven-game losing streak. The Dutchmen extracted a bit of revenge against the Crusaders, who defeated Union earlier in the season, by handing them their first loss in eight games. Junior assistant captain Scott Seney (Silver Spring, MD) scored two goals, including the game-winner, and had one assist to lead the team in its first four-goal game in over a month.
The shots were close after a scoreless first period of play, with Holy Cross holding a slight 9-8 advantage. Union went on to outshoot the Crusaders 20-10 the rest of the way.
Seney connected on one of those shots at 6:38 of the second with his first goal in 10 games. He picked up a rebound shot by Jason Ortolano (Carteret, NJ) in front and sent the puck past Holy Cross goalie Tony Quesada. Tyler McGregor was able to respond with the equalizer just over three minutes later off a defensive zone turnover by Union's Phil McDavitt (Duxbury, MA). McGregor stole the puck and beat goaltender Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA) to his left, lifting the puck into the top shelf.
With eight seconds left before the second intermission Jordan Webb (Nepean, ONT) came up with the go-ahead goal for the Dutchmen. The captain took a feed across the front of the net to Quesada's right and capitalized on the one-timer. Jonathan Poirier (St. Jerome, QUE) picked up the assist. The goal was Webb's third in his last five games after being held scoreless in his previous four. Union would take a 7-1-1 record into the locker room when leading after the second period.
Holy Cross made the Dutchmen work for it though. Pierre Napert-Frenette came out and scored just 12 seconds into the third period to knot the score at two. His shot from the point found its way in off a feed from behind the net by McGregor. Seney went to work once again for the Dutchmen, picking up his ninth goal of the season at 2:34 to put his team up for good. Seney took a pass to the right of the goal from Olivier Bouchard (Quebec City, QUE) and shot it off a defender's stick and through Quesada's legs.
Joel Beal (Brantford, ONT) wrapped up the scoring at 9:19 on the power play off a rebound shot from Webb with the second assist going to Seney. It was Union's first power play goal in 26 chances. The goal was Beal's first in 10 games to give him 98 career points and bring him within seven of taking over second on Union's all-time Division I scoring list.
Mayotte made 17 saves in goal to pick up the win for Union, including a stop at 5:41 of the second period with the game still scoreless. The junior netminder stopped the puck on the goal line off a shot in front by Matt Werry, who stole the puck in Union's zone. Quesada had 34 in the loss.
This was the Dutchmen's final non-league game of the season. Union (11-17-1) is now 6-0 when Seney records two or more points. Up next they will prepare to host Brown on Friday, February 11th at 7:00 p.m. in their first of three remaining home games.
