The Union College softball team opened the 2005 season with a spring trip doubleheader in Ft. Myers, Florida Sunday.
The Dutchwomen lost the opener to Middlebury, 3-2 and later faced Wisconsin-Whitewater.
In the first contest of the year, Union led 2-0 after three and 2-1 after five but Middlebury scored two in the sixth in the victory. Jackie Coffey (Boston, MA/Boston Latin) pitched the complete game for the Dutchwomen, allowing nine hits. Erika Eisenhut (Mohawk, NY/Mohawk) had three of the nine Union hits in the contest, while Colleen White (Westport, CT/Staples) drove in two runs.
Julie Gawronski (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk) had two of Union's six hits in the second game defeat. Wisconsin-Whitewater also had six hits in the game off Union pitcher Abby Arceneaux (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville).
Union continues the spring trip Monday with a 1 p.m. contest against Colby and a 4 p.m. game against Carroll.
