Box ScoreSchenectady, NY (Mar. 5, 2005) At the beginning of the season the upperclassmen take the assumed role of teacher and try to help bring along the newcomers throughout the year as they adjust to playing the college game. Apparently the underclassmen for the Union College men's hockey team have been paying attention as they took center stage to lead the Dutchmen to a 2-1 overtime win over Clarkson at Messa Rink. Sophomore Scott Brady (Sutton, MA) scored the game-winner at 9:21 of the extra session to give Union its first postseason win since March 11, 1994.
Following a scoreless first period of hockey, Mike Grenzy gave Clarkson the lead with his fourth goal of the season at 3:11 of the second. Nick Dodge won the faceoff in Union's zone and got the puck to Max Kolu who shot it in on net. Grenzy picked up the rebound in front of freshman Justin Mrazek (Regina, SASK) and tucked it underneath the goaltender's pads.
Union's Jordan Webb (Nepean, ONT) just missed on a chance to tie the game at 12:20 in the same period when his shot was redirected wide off the stick of teammate Jonathan Poirier (St. Jerome, QUE) with Clarkson goaltender Dustin Traylen waiting in the background. The Dutchmen had their backs against the wall, taking a 1-17 record into the locker room with them when trailing after the second period.
Olivier Bouchard (Quebec City, QUE) went to work immediately in the third with a quick backhand shot in front just 12 seconds in. He took a centering pass from Matt Vagvolgyi (Milford, CT) but was denied. Bouchard came back just over five minutes later with a wrist shot from the left face off circle, forcing Traylen to tip the puck over the crossbar with his shoulder. At 7:42 Poirier had another tip-in chance off a shot from Webb but again sent the puck wide of the net.
After sitting dormant all season freshman Torren Delforte (Shortsville, NY) stepped up for the Dutchmen and scored his first goal of the season at 12:06. Delforte grabbed the puck out of the air right in front of the net off a Clarkson clearing attempt, set it down, and backhanded a high shot past Traylen. The goal was Union's first since the game against Yale, snapping a scoring drought of 194:59.
Union pressured the Clarkson goal right up to the end of regulation. Webb snapped a hard wrist shot off the draw with under a minute to play that forced Traylen to display some quick glove work and snag the puck out of the air.
Brady came through in Union's third straight overtime contest with his fifth goal of the season and first in six games. Freshman Jake Schwan (Clifton Park, NY) set up his teammate with a pass from the right face off circle across the front of the goal. Brady took the puck and went high with a shot to the far post, forcing a decisive game three tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m.
Mrazek finished with 27 saves for Union while Traylen made 28 stops in yet another closely contested battle.
No ECACHL quarterfinal series has ever had three overtime games.
