Senior righthander Frank Arcuri (Utica/Proctor) and junior righty Ben McGuire (Gloversville/Gloversville) both pitched complete games to lead Union College to a non-league baseball sweep over SUNY New Paltz Sunday at Buck Ewing Field. The Dutchmen won the opener, 4-2 and the nightcap, 7-0.
Arcuri allowed just three hits while walking two and posting six strikeouts in the seven inning complete game victory. New Paltz took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Dean Glanzman (Commack/Commack) that scored Justin Buonanamano (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford). But the Dutchmen scored three in the fourth against New Paltz junior Trevor Bailey (West Hurley/Onteora). Mike Flanagan (Oxford/Mercerberg) scored on a wild pitch and Jeff Viamari (Longmeadow, MA/Tabor Academy) had a two-RBI double in the inning.
The Dutchmen (4-9) added an unearned run in the fifth as Flanagan tripled home Kyle Murphy (Plymouth, MA/Phillips Academy), who had reached on an error. William Kelts (Waterford/Christian Brothers) scored on an error in the sixth for the final New Paltz run.
Bailey gave up seven hits and three earned runs, while walking one and striking out three for the visitors. John DeKams (Kings Park/Kings Park) had two hits for New Paltz (7-12), while Flanagan and Viamari had two hits each for the Dutchmen.
In the nightcap, McGuire gave up eight hits and did not allow a runner past second base. He walked one and struck out eight Hawks, while his teammates scored three in the third and four in the fifth. The big hit in the third inning, that featured two New Paltz errors, was an RBI double by Union's Adam Chadwick (Hampton/Winnacunnet). The four-run fourth featured an RBI single by Kyle Murphy (Plymouth, MA/Phillips Academy) and a three-run homer down the left field line by Zach Tillo (Lancaster, MA/Exeter).
New Paltz pitcher Neal Rosengren (White Plains/Hastings) gave up seven hits and five earned runs while walking three and striking out one. DeKams had two hits again in this contest, while Chadwick had two hits in the second game.
Union will host Hamilton for a game on Tuesday at 4 p.m., while New Paltz plays a conference doubleheader at SUNY Oneonta Monday.
