Box ScoreUtica, NY (April 12, 2005) Union extended its win streak to 14 games with a pair of wins at Utica this afternoon in softball action. The Dutchwomen (17-3) took game one by a 5-1 count before cruising to a 10-2 victory in the nightcap. Pitcher Abbey Arceneaux (Mechanicville, NY) helped her cause in game one by giving up just one earned run on four hits while striking out seven batters and going 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs and one run scored.
Junior Julie Gawronski (Dunkirk, NY) doubled to drive in two runs in the third inning to put Union on the board first. She brought home Arceneaux and Alicia Gifford (Schenectady, NY) on the play. Leading 3-0 after four, Arceneaux drove in two more runs in the sixth with a double of her own to bring home Beth Carcone (Utica, NY) and Caitlin Delzotto (Altamont, NY).
Utica spoiled the shutout by scoring its lone run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Junior Nancy Hall singled to bring in Amanda Iannello who hit a double earlier in the inning.
Utica pitcher Stephanie Festa allowed four earned runs on six hits while striking out five as her record fell to 4-9. On the other side Arceneaux improved to 8-1.
In game two the Dutchwomen took advantage of four Utica errors in the sixth by scoring all ten of their runs and breaking open a scoreless game. Sophomore Colleen White (Westport, CT) started the scoring with an RBI double that brought home Claire Hendry (Oneida, NY). Junior Stephanie Rubino (Port Chester, NY) put her stamp on the inning with a three-run homerun to make it 7-0. White would wrap up the scoring later in the inning, coming home after Carcone was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Utica managed two runs with one out in the bottom of the sixth but that was as close as they would come. Kristen MacDonald came in on a Megan Cross double after MacDonald got on base on an error to lead off the inning. Three batters later Amanda Butler singled to drive in Iannello who reached base on a fielder's choice.
Union pitcher Jackie Coffey (Boston, MA) improved to 9-2 on the season, allowing just one earned run on six hits while striking out five batters in game two. Festa also took the loss in game two for Utica. She gave up seven earned runs on 10 hits.
Union will host Oneonta tomorrow in a doubleheader showdown as the Dutchwomen break in a brand new field on the Union College campus. The first game will start at 3:00 p.m. with game two starting approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
