Union splits at home against Oneonta

Box Score

Schenectady, NY (April 13, 2005) Union broke in the brand new Alexander Field with a split against Oneonta in softball action Wednesday afternoon. The Red Dragons came from behind to top the Dutchwomen in game one by a 7-5 score. Union extracted revenge in game two as they took a 5-1 win, bringing its overall record to 18-4. Oneonta now stands at 8-8. Junior Jackie Coffey (Boston, MA) picked up the win for Union striking out eight batters and allowing just six hits and no earned runs. Coffey improved to 10-2.

In game one Union took a 2-0 lead in the third when Erika Eisenhut (Mohawk, NY) singled to drive in Beth Carcone (Utica, NY) immediately followed by an RBI single from Julie Gawronski (Dunkirk, NY) that brought in Abby Arceneaux (Mechanicville, NY). A Union error in the top of the fourth opened the door for a five-run inning for Oneonta to make it a 5-2 game. Shannon Egan capped things off with a two-out double to left field that drove in three of those runs.

After the Red Dragons added another run in fifth off a homerun by Erica Gifford, Union came back and cut it to one run after scoring three in the sixth. Carcone came through with a two-out double of her own to drive home two runs and get things started. With the very next batter Alicia Gifford (Schenectady, NY) traded places with Carcone with her first double of the season.  That would be as close as Union got though. Oneonta added one more run in the seventh.

Arceneaux (8-2) suffered the loss for Union. She allowed three earned runs on eight hits, while striking out nine batters. Amy Herba was the winning pitcher for Oneonta. She allowed three earned runs on six hits and stuck out five batters to improve to 5-4 on the season.

In game two Union scored five runs over the first four innings and never looked back. Leading 1-0 after scoring one run in the second, the Dutchwomen scored three more in the third on an Oneonta error with two outs. Shortstop Sara Herba attempted the force out at second but her throw sailed over the glove of Rena Finsmith and into right field. Another Oneonta error in the fourth led to Union's final run and a 5-0 lead.

Oneonta's lone run of the game came in the fifth as a result of a Union error. The two teams combined for four errors in the game.

Game two starting pitcher Kacie Cunningham (3-5) took the loss, despite allowing just one earned run on six hits and striking out three batters.

Union hits the road for its next three games starting with a double header on Saturday, April 16th at RIT beginning at 1:00 p.m.
