ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Union College's softball team improved to 20-4 on the season, and has now won 17 of the last 18 games, after a 1-0 and 3-2 non-league doubleheader sweep at the Rochester Institute of Technology Saturday. The Tigers fell to 13-11 overall.
In the opener, Abby Arceneaux (Mechanicville/Mechanicville) improved to 9-2 on the season with a complete game six hit shutout. She walked one and struck out nine, as she outdueled Allie Sitton. Sitton gave up just three hits and one earned run in the loss. The teams battled to a scoreless deadlock through six innings before Union broke the ice. With one out and Stephanie Rubino (Port Chester/Holy Child) at first, Rubino stole second. After a strikeout, Arceneaux singled to left to drive in Rubino with the eventual winning run.
In the second contest, Jackie Coffey (Boston, MA/Boston Latin) earned her 11th win of the season with a complete-game eight-hitter. She gave up two earned runs, did not walk a batter, and struck out six. Mary Keegan took the loss, allowing four hits and three earned runs. Union led 3-0 entering the bottom of the fifth in this contest while four different Dutchwomen had one hit each in the victory.
Union returns to Liberty League play Sunday at the University of Rochester for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
