Box ScoreSchenectady, NY (April 17, 2005) A one out single in the seventh inning from Mike Flanagan (Oxford, NY) drove in two runs for Union which proved to be the difference in a 6-3 win over RIT at Central Park Sunday afternoon. The senior led the Dutchmen with three hits in four plate appearances and drove in three runs to help his team improve to 6-12 on the season while dropping RIT to 11-5.
RIT struck first in the second inning with an RBI single to right field by Jim Miller, making it a 1-0 game. Union responded with two runs in the fourth to overtake the Tigers. Scott Carroll (Scituate, MA) brought home the first run with a sacrifice hit to the shortstop. On the very next plate appearance Brian Rhone (Deedham, MA) hit a single to short that brought in Jeff Viamari (Longmeadow, MA). Rhone also helped Union on the other side of the ball with an outstanding defensive effort at third base by turning in some outs over to first base that could have been base hits down the left field line.
The two teams traded a run in the fifth to make it a 3-2 game. RIT plated its second run with some help from a Union error that allowed Rob Ogborne to score. The Dutchmen got the run back though when Flanagan singled to third to bring in Adam Chadwick (Hampton, NY) who singled to lead off the bottom half of the inning.
Following Union's three-run sixth inning the Tigers were able to cut it to three after scoring a run in the eighth. Scott Schneider brought in Matt Singer with a one out, single to right field. Union pitcher Mike Donovan (Trumbull, CT) got Mark Sapienza to ground into a double play two batters later though to end the inning. That's as close as the Tigers got as they went down in order in the ninth.
Donovan picked up his first win of the season for Union. The freshman went the distance, allowing two earned runs on seven hits. His counterpart, Pat Walters, suffered his first loss of the season, giving up four earned runs on nine hits. Both pitchers managed one strikeout apiece.
Up next Union will travel to Oneonta for one nine-inning contest on Tuesday, April 19th at 3:30 p.m.
