Box ScoreRochester, NY (April 17, 2005) Freshman Catherine Kielb (Rensselaer, NY/Columbia) was 3 for 6 with five RBIs as Union College swept a softball doubleheader from the University of Rochester at GLC Field Sunday afternoon. The Dutchwomen won the opener, 8-2, and took the nightcap, 7-3. Union is 22-4 overall, 4-0 in the Liberty League. Rochester is 20-13, 2-2 in the Liberty League.
Julie Garwonski (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk) was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and one RBI in the opener. Colleen White (Westport, CT/Staples) was 2 for 4 with a run scored and one RBI. Alicia Gifford (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland) was 1 for 4 with 2 RBIs.
Abby Arceneaux (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) picked up her 10th win in the first game. She allowed five hits, two walks, and struck out seven. Both runs against her were unearned.
Rochester's Jena Robertson (Tulsa, OK/Nathan Hale) was 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs. She doubled home two runs in the bottom of the second to give the Yellowjackets a 2-1 lead.
Union broke it open in the fourth, scoring seven runs all unearned on six hits and three errors. Gifford singled in two runs and Gawronski followed with an RBI double. That chased Rochester starter Nina Long (Wilmette, IL/New Trier). In three and two-thirds, Long allowed eight hits and seven runs just one earned. She was replaced by Sam Carr (Fairport, NY/Fairport). Carr gave up one unearned run in the fourth. She struck out two and allowed two hits in three and a third.
In the nightcap, Kielb was 2 for 3 with four RBIs and one run scored. She hit a two-run home run in the first as Union jumped ahead, 3-0. In the third, she singled in two more runs.
Jackie Coffey (Boston, MA/Boston Latin) struck out 10, walked two, and scattered nine hits to the Yellowjackets. Jen Moshier (Hyde Park, NY/FDR) took the loss. She allowed seven runs (five earned), struck out five, and gave up nine hits in six innings. Robertson, who homered leading off the bottom of the first, relieved in the seventh. She retired three straight, two on strikeouts.
Robertson scored two runs for the Yellowjackets (1 for 3). Carr was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Jessica Sorrentino (N. Bellmore, NY/Mepham) was 2 for 4 and Bridget Baran (Holyoke, MA/Holyoke) was 2 for 3 with an RBI.
Union will play on more road game before returning home for its final three games. The Dutchwomen will play two at Hartwick on Tuesday, April 19th beginning at 3:00 p.m.
