ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Jeff Viamari (Longmeadow, MA/Tabor Academy) had five hits and seven RBIs to help visiting Union College to a doubleheader split with the University of Rochester at Towers Field here this afternoon.
Viamari was 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs in Union's 7-5 game one win. He was 2 for 4 with 4 RBIs in the nitecap, a 6-5 Rochester victory.
Union's game one win eliminated Rochester from the race for the final Liberty League playoff spot. The Yellowjackets needed a sweep today to secure the final position. It goes to St. Lawrence. Rochester finished fifth in the final LL standings at 4-8. Union and Vassar tied for sixth place at 3-9. Overall, Rochester finished 21-16-1. Union is 12-21.
Eric Giovannone (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) earned the win in game one. He went 5.2 innings, allowing nine hits, five walks, and five runs - all earned. He struck out five. Frank Arcuri (Utica, NY/Proctor) picked up the save.
In the nitecap, Rochester reliever Pete McEneaney (New York, NY/Collegiate) got his second win of the season. He went the final 2.2 innings, allowing two hits and striking out four. Union's John Gallagher (Etna, NH.Hanover) took the loss. He save up 3 hits and one earned run in 2.2 innings.
Union led all the way in the opener. Adam Chadwick (Hampton, NY/Winnacunnet) doubled down the left field line leading off in the first and Kyle Murphy (Plymouth, MA/Phillips Academy) homered. The Yellowjackets got one back right away. Adam Braveman (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) singled, advanced on a walk, and scored on a single by Justin Martinez (Corpus Christi, TX/Incarnate Word).
Down 3-1 in the third, Rochester threatened. Jon Fanning's (Slingerlands, NY/Guilderland) single brought home one run, but the Yellowjackets left the bases loaded.
Viamari led off the fourth with a home run. Rochester made it 4-3 on Jim Bard's (Grosse Isle, MI/Chesterton) triple and a sac fly by Scott Smith (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima).
Union scored three in the top of the fifth. Two came home on Viamari's bases-loaded double to center. Rochester got two back on a single by Mark Jackson (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) and an RBI grounder by Dave Kloc (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon).
Giavannone left in the sixth with two outs and runners on first and second. Arcuri relieved and promptly hit Martinez, loading the bases. He escaped when Jackson grounded to third.
In the bottom of the seventh, Fanning singled to right. Pinch-hitter Josh London (Wilmette, IL/New Trier) singled off Viamari's glove. Ed Kahovec (Victor, NY/Victor) ran for London. Bard tried to bunt and missed. Union catcher Zach Tillo (Lancaster, MA/Exeter) picked off Fanning at second. Bard singled, but Arcuri got a strikeout and flyout to end it.
Bard, Fanning, Martinez, and Dan Price (Oak Park, IL/Oak Park) all had two hits apiece for Rochester in the opener.
In game two, Braveman and Devin Shane (Bedford, NH/Manchester West) had RBI singles for an early 2-0 lead. Union took a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth on Viamari's bases loaded double and an RBI groundout by Brian Rhone (Dedham, MA/Loomis Chaffee).
Rochester came right back. Price singled and was sacrificed to second. Fanning singled to left, with Price crossing to third. Kloc singled, scoring Price (3-3). Shane walked, loading the bases. Gallagher relieved starter Mike Donovan Trumbull, CT/Trumbull). Bard singled to left. Fanning scored, and when the ball was bobbled, Kloc came home. Bard reached second, but Shane was thrown out trying to go to third.
A two-out bases loaded single by Viamari in the top of the seventh got the Dutchmen even at 5-5. In the bottom half, Dan Pfohl (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph's) singled, was sacrificed to second, and scored when Martinez singled to left center.
McEneaney retired the Dutchmen in order in the eighth and got the first two in the ninth. With two out, Mike Flanagan (Oxford, NY/Mercerburg) doubled to right. He was thrown out at third trying to stretch it to a triple. Viamari was two hitters away.
