ITHACA, NY – The No. 13-ranked Cornell Big Red tallied two first period goals en route to a 6-0 defeat of visiting Union College in ECAC Hockey League men's action at Lynah Rink Saturday evening.
Cornell (8-3-1, 5-2-1 ECACHL) quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead, registering two goals in just over three minutes of play. Taylor Davenport struck first with his second goal of the season. Just 48 seconds into the game, Davenport one-timed a pass from Tyler Mugford, who had broken out the puck up the left after a barrage of Union shots at the other end.
Freshman Tony Romano struck at 3:01, lifting the puck across Union goaltender Justin Mrazek's (Regina, SASK) right shoulder for his fourth goal of the season. Topher Scott broke the puck out and passed up through the neutral zone to Jared Seminoff. Seminoff broke past a Union defender and drew Mrazek out to the left before passing across to Romano.
Union (5-5-2, 1-3-0 ECACHL) fell victim to Cornell's fast breakout in the first period, but Mrazek kept the Dutchmen in the game with 17 saves.
The Big Red struck early in the second period to edge its lead to 3-0 when Blake Gallagher intercepted a clearing pass just inside the blue line and sent the puck past Mrazek's extended glove.
Union recouped in the second with 11 shots on Cornell goaltender Ben Scrivens, but could not solve the rookie in his first career start. The Dutchmen skated close to six minutes with the man advantage, and peppered Scrivens with nine shots on the power play, including five in a two-minute advantage midway through the period. Mike Schreiber (Sherwood Park, ALB) and Lane Caffaro (Slave Lake, ALB) combined for four shots on the period as point men on the power play.
Scott added his fourth goal of the season at 2:37 of the third as he walked in with the puck, drove to the net and flipped the puck over Mrazek's glove. Raymond Sawada followed two minutes later with a breakaway goal.
Sophomore Matt Cook (Belle Mead, NJ) had a chance to put the Dutchmen on the board seven minutes into the third as he cycled down low on the power play. He one-timed a pass down from Caffaro, but his shot careened off the post.
The Big Red tacked on a sixth goal with three minutes left in the game as Evan Barlow dragged the puck across the crease and flipped in a backhander.
Mrazek made 20 more saves through the second and third period to finish with 36 on the night. Scrivens finished with 22 for his first career win and shutout.
Union continues its four-game ECACHL road trip at Princeton and Quinnipiac next weekend. The Dutchmen face off with the Tigers at 7 p.m. Friday before facing the Bobcats at 7 p.m. Saturday.
