FT. MYERS, FL -- Senior pitchers Abby Arceneaux (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) and Jackie Coffey (Boston, MA/Boston Latin) combined for two solid pitching performances to lead Union's softball teams to a pair of victories to open the 2006 season Sunday. The Dutchwomen defeated Elms, 3-0 in the first game of the year and later downed Lawrence, 3-2, in the Gene Cusic Classic.
Arceneaux allowed just two hits in the complete game win, while walking one and striking out five. Junior second baseman Colleen White (Westport, NY/Staples) had two hits including a double in the win over Elms, and Union also got doubles from Bridget Graham (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) and Megan Kaknis (New Windsor, NY/NFA). Both Graham and Kaknis are freshmen newcomers on this season's squad. Union scored in the bottom of the first and added insurance with two runs in the fourth inning.
Coffey struck out 10 and gave up four hits in the win over Lawrence. Michelle Rogers (Clarence, NY/Clarence) had two hits, including a double, and drove in a run for the Dutchwomen. Union had nine hits in the game and led 3-0 until Lawrence came up just short with a two-run top of the seventh.
Union will play Monday against Lasel at 9 a.m. and New England College at 1 p.m.
