WAYNE, NJ - Sophomore Jose Sotomayor earned his first career victory, pitching six solid innings, as William Paterson recorded its ninth victory in 10 games with an 11-2 triumph over Union in non-conference baseball action Wednesday at Pioneer Baseball Park.
Senior left fielder Pete Zaccheria scored three runs and stole two bases, while junior first baseman Don Reinertsen and junior catcher Ryan Brand each had two hits and two RBI for the Pioneers (10-4).
Senior first baseman Jeff Viamari (Longmeadow, MA/Tabor Academy) was 3-for-4 with an RBI and junior third baseman Brian Rhone (Dedham, MA/Loomis Chaffee) was 3-for-4 with a run scored for the Dutchmen (1-8).
Sotomayor went a career-long six innings, scattering four hits and two runs while walking three and fanning three before three relievers combined to shut out Union the rest of the way.
William Paterson scored in each of the first five innings to take an 8-1 lead. After Union made it 8-2 after an RBI double by Viamari in the sixth, the Pioneers added three insurance runs in the eighth, two of them on the first home run by Luis Fernandez career.
Freshman right-hander Matt Sheehan (Lexington, MA/Belmont Hill) absorbed the loss for Union, falling to 0-1 after allowing four hits and five runs (four earned) over the first two innings.
Union scored its other run on a groundout by junior designated hitter Carson Strang (Shaker Heights, OH/Shaker Heights) in the third inning.
The Dutchmen host Clarkson to open the home season Saturday, with two games at 1 p.m. at Central Park.
