SCHENECTADY, NY -- Union College softball coach Pete Brown notched his 200th career victory in an 8-0 triumph over Utica in the first of a non-league doubleheader at Alexander Field Wednesday. In the nightcap, the Pioneers scored two unearned runs in the seventh and pulled out the split with a 5-4 win. #25 ranked Union is now 16-2 and Utica stands 15-5.
Brown has coached Union since the 1998 season, and now stands 200-85-2 in his career, good for a winning percentage of 69.7%.
In the opener, sent 10 batters to the plate in the fifth inning and scored five times, featuring a three-run homer by Bridget Graham (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park). It was her second round tripper of the season. Catherine Kielb (Rensselaer, NY/Columbia) had three hits in the contest, and Beth Carcone (Utica, NY/Hartford) drove in two runs in the contest. Abby Arceneaux (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) allowed just two Pioneer hits and sturck out seven in the complete (six inning) performance to improve to 8-1 on the year.
Kallie Mathis (West Leyden, NY/West Leyden) gave up three earned runs and struck out one while allowing 10 hits to fall to 7-3 for Utica.
In the second game, the Pioneers entered the top of the seventh trailing 4-3. Kourtney Kupiec (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) led off the inning with a single and was bunted over to second. Heidi Savage (Utica, NY/T.R. Proctor) was hit by a pitch and after a pop out and a walk to load the bases, Amanda Butler (Utica, NY/Proctor) reached on an infield error that scored the tying and eventual winning run. The two unearned runs came off Arceneaux (8-2), who pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief and allowed two hits while striking out two. Union starter Jackie Coffey (Boston, MA/Boston Latin) gave up nine hits in 5 1/3 innings, struck out four and did not walk a batter.
Union led 3-0 after three innings on a solo homer by Michelle Rogers (Clarence, NY/Clarence) and a two-run homer by Julie Gawronski (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk).
Butler had three hits and drove in two runs, while Kupiec also had three hits for the Pioneers. Andrea Curley (South Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls) gave up seven hits and struck out five for her eighth win in 10 Utica decisions.
Union has home twinbills Friday vs. RIT (3 p.m.) and Saturday vs. Rochester (1 p.m.).
