Schenectady, NY – It proved to be a very good Friday for Union (18-2) as they totaled 10 runs to sweep RIT (11-13) in non-conference softball action at Alexander Field. In game one the Dutchwomen scored four runs in the sixth to open up a tie game and come away with a 5-3 win. They scored five more runs in the second game, including three over the first two innings on the way to a 5-1 victory. Senior Julie Gawronski (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk) finished 3-for-7 with three RBIs and one run scored, including two hits and two RBIs in the opener.
In game one Josa Hanzlik doubled to right field in the first inning to drive in Breana Sniezek. Union answered in the bottom of the second though with a solo homerun from freshman
Michelle Rogers (Clarence, NY/Clarence).
Junior
Colleen White (Westport, CT/Staples) got Union started in the sixth inning with a one-out double to left field. Five batters later, with two outs and one run already in Gawronski singled to right, driving in two more runs.
Catherine Kielb (Rensselaer, NY/Columbia) followed up with an RBI single on the next at-bat.
RIT chipped away in the seventh inning to come within two runs with two outs. Heidi Schille and Hanzlik each singled to drive in a run but Union pitcher Abbey Arceneaux (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) recovered and forced Rachel Richards to ground out and pick up the win.
Arceneaux (9-2) allowed three runs on nine hits while striking out five batters for her ninth win of the season. Shila Wells (3-5) gave up five runs on 13 hits and struck out three batters in the loss.
Both teams committed one error and left nine runners on base.
In game two Union took an early 2-0 in the first inning on a two-run double by freshman
Megan Kaknis (New Windsor, NY/NFA). Arceneaux doubled in the second inning to bring in
Stephanie Rubino (Port Chester, NY/Holy Child) after she led off with a double to right center.
Katie Grenga brought in the lone Tigers' run to make it 4-1 in the fifth with a double to left center that brought in Jenna Mausolf who led off the inning with a single.
Senior
Jackie Coffey (Boston, MA/Boston Latin) remained unbeaten as she did not allow an earned run and surrendered just four hits for her eighth win. Mary Keegan (1-2) allowed five earned runs on nine hits in the loss.
Union hosts Rochester College tomorrow in a doubleheader for its first Liberty League meeting of the season. Game one gets underway at 1:00 p.m.
