SCHENECTADY, NY -- Senior pitcher Jackie Coffey (Boston, MA/Boston Latin) recorded a season-high 12 strikeouts and improved to 10-0 in leading #25 Union to a 7-1 win over the University of Rochester in the nightcap of a Liberty League softball doubleheader at Alexander Field Saturday. In the opener, the Yellowjackets scored three in the first and held on for a 3-2 win.
Union is now 19-3 overall and 1-1 in the Liberty League, while Rochester stands 17-11 and 3-1 in the league.
Coffey posted her third game of 10 or more strikeouts for the Dutchwomen. She gave up seven hits and walked one, and the only run came when pinch hitter Andrea LaRocque (Nashua, NH/Nashua) hit her first home run of the season. The Dutchwomen had two hits each from Michelle Rogers (Clarence, NY/Clarence), Erika Eisenhut (Mohawk, NY/Mohawk) and Julie Gawronski (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk). Megan Kaknis (New Windsor, NY/NFA) drove in two runs during a six-run third inning, and the Dutchwomen had 11 hits on the day. Union sent 10 batters to the plate in the third stanza.
Seven different Yellowjackets had a hit in the second game, while starter Jennifer Moshier (Rhinebeck, NY/FD Roosevelt) allowed five hits and two earned runs in two innings.
Rochester scored three runs in the first inning of the opening game, featuring an RBI single by Megan Winn (Tampa, FL/Phillips Academy) and a two-run homer by Kristen DeCarlo (Lockport, NY/Sacred Heart). It was DeCarlo's fifth home run of the season and second in two days. Rochester starter Beth Ameno (Buffalo, NY/John F. Kennedy) won for the sixth time on the year, allowing five hits and two earned runs while striking out seven. Winn wound up with two hits and Jena Robertson (Tulsa, OK/Tulsa Hale) also had two hits for the Yellowjackets.
Union starter Abby Arceneaux (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) allowed three hits after the first inning, and wound up with seven strikeouts. Gawronski had two of Union's five hits in the opener.
The Dutchwomen threatened to tie it in the bottom of the seventh. Stephanie Rubino (Port Chester, NY/Holy Child) led off the inning with a double, and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. After Arceneaux walked, pinch hitter Bridget Graham (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) grounded to shortstop Robertson, who threw to first baseman Laura Rubinchuck (Slingerlands, NY/Albany Academy for Girls) for the second out. On that play, Union pinch runner Megan Bordino (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz) rounded third, but was tagged out on the play just in front of the plate to end the game.
Union, ranked 25th in the NFCA Division III poll this week, will host Hartwick at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in the final home regular season scheduled doubleheader. Rochester hosts Buffalo State Tuesday for a non-league doubleheader at 3 p.m.
