POUGHKEEPSIE, NY -- Vassar and Union were each led to a victory behind strong pitching performances, splitting a Liberty League doubleheader at Prentiss Field. Vassar junior Quinn Robinson pitched a complete-game shutout and led the Brewers to a 12-0 victory in game one. With the split, Vassar is now at 6-19 overall and 4-8 in league games, while Union is 7-15 and 6-10.

Union came back with a 10-2 victory in the second game on the strength of a fine pitching performance by freshman Matt Sheehan (Lexington, MA/Belmont Hill). Union's Kyle Murphy (Plymouth, MA/Phillips Academy) had five hits on the day.

In the opener, Union had its biggest threat against Robinson in the second inning. With two outs Ben Brown (Brookline, NH/Bishop Guertin) hit a popup that dropped into shallow center. The next batter, Zach Tillo (Lancaster, MA/Exeter), hit a dribbler up the third base line that went for an infield hit. With runners on first and second, Matt Smith (Latham,NY/LaSalle) hit a hard line drive that Vassar third baseman Ivan Cedillo snared on a diving catch.

Vassar grabbed the lead in the bottom half of the inning, scoring six runs with two outs. Centerfielder Paul Noonan dropped a single to center to lead off the inning. A sacrifice bunt moved him to third, and after a strikeout, a groundball off the bat of sophomore Mike Murn made its way through the hole between third and short. Though the throw from left beat Noonan to the plate, he executed a perfect slide to avoid the tag and score Vassar's opening run. After an error put runners on first and second, second baseman John Mandel lined a single off Union pitcher Kevin McCormick (Utica, NY/Utica) that allowed Murn to score. Adam Gallari followed with a single up the middle to drive in two Brewers. Matt Elias and Noonan also had RBI singles in the inning to put Vassar up 6-0.

Robinson shut down the Dutchmen offence. In the complete game shutout, he allowed seven hits and one walk, while striking out six Union batters. The Brewers added to their lead throughout the game, scoring a pair of runs each in the third, fourth , and sixth innings. Noonan went 4-for-4 in the game, and scored three runs. Cedillo, Gallari, Murn and catcher Will Sugerman each drove in two runs.

Murphy and Brian Rhone (Dedham MA/Loomis Chaffee) each had a pair of hits for the Dutchmen.

In the nightcap, the Dutchmen opened their scoring in the game's first inning, scoring three runs off Vassar starting pitcher Brian Sciubba. Junior Eric Giovannone (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) singled up the middle with one out and promptly stole second base. After a hit batter, first baseman Jeff Viamari lined a double for two runs. Viamari would later score on a single by designated hitter Scott Carroll (Scituate, MA/Scituate).

Union had another big inning in the fourth, plating another four runs. The Dutchmen scored all their runs with two outs, getting an RBI infield single from catcher Adam Chused (Concord, MA/Concord-Carlisle) along with a bases-loaded walk and two bases-loaded wild pitches.

Sheehan shut down the Brewers over the first seven innings. Vassar did not threaten to score until the fifth inning when, with the bases loaded and one out, Sheehan induced a lineout and a groundout to keep the Brewers off the board. Vassar scored its only runs of the game in the eighth on RBI singles by Gallari and Ramos. Sheehan pitched eight innings, allowing nine hits and two walks while striking out a pair.

Murphy had three hits in the game and Viamari had two hits and three RBI. Murphy had eight hits in two days and four games against Vassar. Smith also had a pair of hits and stole two bases. Mike Murn had two hits for the Brewers.

Union hosts Oneonta on Tuesday, April 18 at 4 p.m. at Buck Ewing Field at Central Park.
