SCHENECTADY, NY – Union (21-3) gave its seniors a proper send off with a pair of wins over Hartwick (7-13) in the teams regular season home finale at Alexander Field. In game one the Dutchwomen plated seven runs in the first inning on their way to a 9-1 victory before taking game two by a 7-2 count. Junior
Colleen White (Westport, CT/Staples) combined for five hits in seven appearances and drove in five runs to back up the efforts of senior pitchers
Abby Arceneaux (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) and
Jackie Coffey (Boston, MA/Boston Latin). Kelsey Heider drove in two runs on one hit in game two for the Hawks. Rose Cunningham drove in the other run.
Cunningham got Hartiwick on the board first in game one with a single to left field in the first inning that drove in Katie Benak. The Dutchwomen hit through the lineup in the bottom of the inning with 10 hits to bring in its seven runs. White and Arceneaux both drove in a pair of runs during the outburst. White doubled to center field to bring in
Megan Kaknis (New Windsor, NY/NFA) and
Catherine Kielb (Rensselaer, NY/Columbia) while Arceneaux brought in
Erika Eisenhut (Mohawk, NY/Mohawk) and
Katie Ratner (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) to help her cause.
Union took advantage of a Hartwick error with one out in the third inning to add two more runs.
Julie Gawronski (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk) was driven in by Kaknis, who reached base on the error, and
Michelle Rogers (Clarence, NY/Clarence) came home on a fielder's choice by White.
Union combined for 16 hits while Hartwick put up five. Arceneaux (10-3) allowed just one run and struck out seven batters for the game one win. Kathleen Morgese (1-4) allowed eight earned runs in the loss.
In game two Hartwick came out again and scored in the first inning, doubling its total from the opener. Heider hit her third homerun of the season to bring in both runs. Julie Scarano led off with a single.
Union came back and put up five runs over the next three innings while keeping the Hawks grounded for the rest of the game. Kielb got the Dutchwomen going with two outs in the bottom half of the first on a single that brought in Gawronski.
A three-run second put them ahead as Arceneaux drove home the decisive run with a single to left field that scored
Stephanie Rubino (Port Chester, NY/Holy Child).
Union added two more runs in the sixth off a pair of singles from Kielb and White.
Coffey (11-0) remained unbeaten allowing just two runs on four hits while striking out nine batters. Kelsey Heider (5-7) took the loss, giving up five earned runs on 12 hits. She walked and struck out five batters.
Union returns to Liberty League action at Skidmore on Sunday, April 23rd in a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
