TROY, NY -- Senior pitcher Jackie Coffey (Boston, MA/Boston Latin) struck out 10 and allowed just four hits through six innings, but Rensselaer scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a 2-1 softball victory over the Dutchwomen in the second game of a doubleheader Friday. The Red Hawks won the opener, 4-1, and Union fell to 23-5, 1-3 in the Liberty League, while RPI is 29-3 and 4-0.
Coffey struck out 10 for the fourth time this season, and was looking for her 13th win in 13 decisions. But Katherine Valenta singled to open the bottom of the 7th, was bunted over to second, then scored on a long double to left by Courtney Sweeney. After a strikeout for the second out, Stephanie Vanek singled to center to plate Valenta with the winning run.
Union took a 1-0 lead in the third, as hometown native Catherine Kielb (Rensselaer, NY/Columbia) walked, then after a strikeout, went to second on a single by Megan Kaknis (New Windsor, NY/NFA). After a fly out, Erika Eisenhut (Mohawk, NY/Mohawk) reached and advanced to second on a throwing error by the third baseman, and Kielb scored on the play.
Union, entering the game as the NCAA Division III leader in batting (.395), had four hits, including two by Kaknis, off winning pitcher Amy Huling (12-2). Coffey (12-1) allowed seven hits for the contest.
In the opener, Union took a 1-0 lead in the second on a two-out RBI by Colleen White (Westport, CT/Staples). But RPI took the lead on a two-run homer by Sarah Finkbeiner, her seventh of the season, in the third inning. The Red Hawks added two more on a two-run double by Julianne Bass in the fifth inning. Union starter Abby Arceneaux (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) gave up three earned runs and eight hits while striking out four, and is now 11-4. Winning pitcher Michelle Street struck out seven and allowed eight hits as well, and improved to 13-1. Arceneaux and White had three hits each for the Dutchwomen.
Union plays a Liberty League twinbill at St. Lawrence Sunday at 3 p.m.
