HENRIETTA, NY -- The University of Rochester rallied twice twice to sweep a baseball doubleheader from Union College for the second consecutive day, in games played at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
Rochester trailed early, 2-1, in game one, before scoring single runs in three innings to pull out a 4-2 win. In the nitecap, the Yellowjackets trailed 2-0 through four innings. They tied it in the sixth, scored three in the eighth, and two more in the ninth for a 7-2 victory.
With the sweep, Rochester improves to 9-3 in the Liberty League, 10-12 overall. The Yellowjackets are in first place in the league standings, two games ahead of 5-3 Rensselaer (which hosts Rochester next weekend). Clarkson and St. Lawrence are tied for third place at 6-6. The top four teams in the league standings advance to the Liberty League championships in early May. Union is 3-9 in Liberty League play, 4-13 overall.
In game one, John Fishback (Rochester, New York/Webster Schroeder) earned a complete game victory for his second win this season. Fishback scattered six hits, allowed two earned runs, walked two, and struck out three. Dan Pfohl (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph's) singled in Kurt Bednarcyk (Fairport, NY/Fairport) for a 1-0 Rochester lead in the top of the first. Union rallied for two in its half. Adam Chused (Concord, MA/Concord-Carlisle) and Kyle Murphy (Plymouth, MA/Phillips Academy) singled. Carson Strang's (Shaker Heights, OH/Shaker Heights) ground ball was booted by Bednarcyk, scoring Chused. Murphy scored on an RBI single by Shawn Johnston (Hamilton, NJ/The Peddie School).
Rochester tied it in the fourth. Dave Klock (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) scored on Josh London's (Wilmette, IL/New Trier) doubleplay grounder. In the fifth, Jim Bard (Grosse Isle, MI/Chesterton) tripled and scored on a single by Devin Shane ((Bedford, NH/Manchester West).
For Union, Eric Giavannone (New Hartford, CT/New Hartford) took the loss. He pitched a complete game, scattering eight hits and walking one. He struck out four. Three of the four runs he surrendered were earned. Murphy was 3 for 3 with a run scored.
In Game two, an error by Bednarcyk led to a pair of Union runs in the fourth. Chused and Murphy singled and advanced on Strang's sac bunt. They scored when Josh McKelligan's grounder to second was thrown away.
Shane singled in Bard with Rochester's first run in the fifth. Bednarcyk scored on Pfohl's single in the sixth to tie it. In the eighth, the Yellowjackets went ahead for good. Kloc doubled and moved to third on Pfohl's single. When Union threw the ball away on Pfohl's attempted steal, Kloc scored. Dan Brien (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) doubled in Pfohl and later scored when Bard's grounder was booted. Kloc and Brien hit run-scoring singles in the ninth for insurance.
Mike Donovan (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) took the loss for Union. He allowed 12 hits, five runs (two earned), and struck out one without walking anyone. Matt Sheehan (Lexington, MA/Belmont Hill) pitched one inning and Brian McLaughlin (Norwood, NJ/Old Tappan) gave up three hits and two runs in the ninth. Strang had two of Union's five hits.
Foley earned his first victory of the year for Rochester. He scattered five hits, gave up two earned runs, walked two, and struck out five.
Union plays a non-league game at Hamilton Tuesday at 4 p.m.
