ONEONTA, NY -- The Union softball team had 28 hits on the day in sweeping SUNY Oneonta by scores of 3-1 and 12-9 Tuesday. The Dutchwomen improved to 27-5 on the year. Senior outfielder Julie Gawronski (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk) drove in six runs on the day and senior pitcher/first baseman Abby Arceneaux (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) had six hits and won the opener.

In the first contest, Arceneaux improved to 13-4 and was 3 for 4 with an RBI at the plate. She gave up six hits and one earned run, while walking one and striking out six. Michelle Rogers (Clarence, NY/Clarence) and Alicia Gifford (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland) posted two hits each in the 10 hit attack. The Dutchwomen trailed 1-0 after four innings but tied it with a single run in the fifth then took the lead for good with a run in the sixth.

Arceneaux was 3 for 3 playing first base in the nightcap, and Gawronski, Rogers and Colleen White (Westport, CT/Staples) had three hits each in the contest that featured 18 Union hits. Gawronski drove in five runs and hit her fifth home run of the year. In this slugfest, which featured 14 hits from the Red Dragons, Union led 6-2 after the second, and led 8-5 into the bottom of the sixth. But the Red Dragons took a 9-8 lead into the seventh before Union scored four times in the top of the seventh. Jackie Coffey (Boston, MA/Boston Latin) gave up four earned runs and struck out five, and is now 14-1 on the year.

Union will make up a Liberty League twinbill on May 4 at Skidmore.
