PORT CHARLOTTE, FL – The DePauw University baseball team scored nine runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break open the game and defeat Union College, 11-3, at the Charlotte County Sports Complex Thursday afternoon. Union starter
David Arouca (Wilmette, IL/ Blair Academy) held the opposition to four hits and two runs through the first seven innings.
Adam Ford got the Tigers on the board in the bottom of the second frame, landing safely at first on a hit through the left side, and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Ford got to third when Drew Holy grounded out to the first baseman, and crossed the plate on a sac fly to center by Jake Tri.
Union (1-8) collected two hits in the next five innings, and capitalized in the top of the seventh to tie the game.
Pat Wilson (Cos Cob, CT/ Greenwich) reached on a fielder's choice and stole second.
Scott Carroll (Scituate, MA/ Scituate) reached first and Wilson advanced to third on an error by the shortstop. Carroll stole second, and on a throwing error by the catcher, Wilson scored and Carroll advanced to third. Carroll also hit the Dutchmen's first home run of the season, a solo shot to left center, in the top of the ninth inning. He finished the day two-for-four with an RBI.
DePauw (12-10) rallied in the bottom of the inning, Ford reached on an error and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Jon Newman. Ford scored the go-ahead run when designated hitter Justin Pribble drove a double to deep right field.
Down 2-1 in the top of the eighth, Union again rallied to tie the score.
Ryan Bowes (Hamilton, NJ/ The Peddie School) led off with a double down the right field line and advanced to third when
Paul Mene (Falls Church, VA/ George Mason HS) reached on an error.
Josh McKelligan (Canton, MA/ Salisbury School) walked but
Kyle Murphy (Plymouth, MA/ Phillips Andover Academy) lined into an unassisted double play at second to leave runners on the corners and set up the double steal that saw Bowes cross the plate. Bowes was two-for-four on the day with a stolen base and a run scored.
DePauw batted around in the eighth, recording nine runs on three walks, two errors and a series of five hits, including a 2RBI double down the left field line by Jeremy Dickinson.
Arouca ended his first career appearance striking out three and giving up six runs (four earned) on six hits in 7 innings. Reliever
John Moore (Westport, MA/ Moses Brown) allowed five runs on three hits while striking out one in the final inning.
DePauw used a battery of pitchers, with Tri picking up his first win after pitching the eighth inning. Tri started the game as the designated hitter and registered
Union completes its Florida trip on Friday morning when the Dutchmen face Southeastern of the National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association at 11 am at the Charlotte County Sports Complex.
