SCHENECTADY, NY – Sophomore shortstop
Michelle Rogers (Clarence, NY/Clarence) had two hits in each game and the Union College softball team opened Liberty League play with a sweep over Skidmore College Saturday at Alexander Field. Union won the opener, 7-2, and took the nightcap, 8-0 in five innings. Union, winners of seven straight and nine of 10, improved to 18-6 overall. Skidmore fell to 9-15 overall and 1-4 in Liberty League play.
Freshmen pitchers
Lindsay Colvin (Medfield, MA/Medfield) and
Ginny Sack (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills) both earned complete game wins for the Dutchwomen. Colvin gave up two earned runs and struck out five in the first game to improve to 5-2 on the season. Sack remained undefeated in her rookie year (6-0). She gave up just three hits and struck out four without a walk while facing 18 batters in the five inning complete game triumph.
Third baseman
Ashley Kovack (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) had two RBIs in the opener, and Union won despite Skidmore posting 11 hits the Dutchwomen's eight. A four-run Union fourth erased a 2-1 Skidmore lead as the Dutchwomen had four consecutive RBI hits.
Skidmore starter Sarah Stehouwer (Woodstock, VT/Woodstock Union) took the loss, allowing eight hits in 4 2/3 innings. Sophomore third baseman Chloe Carden (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) had three hits for the Thoroughbreds.
The Dutchwomen scored two in the first, three in the second and one more in the third en route to the victory, and sealed the game with two in the fourth while Colvin kept the visitors quiet at the plate. She allowed just three singles, two by right fielder Thyra Johnson (Brooktondale, NY/Dryden). Rogers had a two-RBI single in the three-run second, and center fielder Kailtin Graham (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) also had two hits in the second game of the day.
Union hosts Hamilton for a non-league doubleheader Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Alexander Field.
