SCHENECTADY, NY -- Sophomore infielder
Megan Kaknis (New Windsor, NY/NFA) had five hits, eight RBIs and two home runs as the Union softball team posted 27 hits in a doubleheader sweep over Hamilton, 7-3 and 11-3 (5 innings) at Alexander Field Tuesday. The Dutchwomen, who have won nine straight and 11 of 12, improved to 20-6 and posted the program's fifth straight 20 win season. Hamilton fell to 1-28 after this non-league doubleheader.
Kaknis hit her eighth and ninth home runs in the first game, while driving in five. Designated player
Colleen White (Westport, CT/Staples) had three hits and Union got two hits each from
Megan Bordino (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz), Lindsay Larabee (Westfield, MA/Westfield) and
Kaitlin Graham (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park).
Freshman pitcher
Tiffany Ippoliti (Schuylerville, NY/Schuylerville) improved to 8-4 with the complete game nine-hitter. She allowed three earned runs and struck out four. Megan Coughlin (Clifton Park, NY/Catholic Central) took the loss, but struck out four and walked one for the Continentals. Amber O'Connor (Pembroke, ONT/Lawrenceville School of NJ), Kelly Fitzsimmons (Glenmont, NY/Bethlehem Central) and Jennifer Sadowsky (Allendale, NJ/Saddle River Day School) had two hits each for Hamilton.
With the game tied at 3-3, Union scored four in the fifth on a two-run homer by Kaknis and RBI doubles by Larabee and Graham.
In the second contest, Union freshman pitcher Ginny Sack (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills) improved to 7-0 in her rookie season. She gave up just five hits and two earned runs with two strikeouts in the five-inning victory. Erin Hoener (Toronto, ONT/Havergal College) was the losing pitcher for Hamilton, which go two hits from Kate Riester (Windham, NH/Brooks School of MA).
Kaknis was three for three with three RBIs in the nightcap, and
Kelly Owings (Oswego, NY/Oswego) also had three hits for the Dutchwomen.
Bridget Graham (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) hit her first home run of the season, and Graham and
Catherine Kielb (Rensselaer, NY/Columbia) had two hits each in the 13 hit attack.
Kaknis is hitting .523 on the season and has posted 18 RBIs with eight extra base hits during the Dutchwomen's nine-game winning streak.
Union hosts Liberty League rival Rensselaer Friday at 3 p.m.
