Megan Bordino (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz) had six hits in two games and sophomore
Megan Kaknis (New Windsor, NY/NFA) hit two home runs as Union College opened the home season with a softball sweep of Russell Sage, 9-1 and 10-2 at Alexander Field Saturday. Both games ended in the fifth inning, and the Dutchwomen improved to 11-5 on the season while the Gators fell to 0-14.
Union jumped out to a 4-0 lead through three innings and added four in the fourth before closing out the first game with the ninth run in the bottom of the fifth for the eight run advantage. Bordino was 4 for 4 batting as the designated player, while shortstop
Michelle Rogers (Clarence, NY/Clarence) extended her hit streak to 14 games with two hits, including her third homer of the season, and three RBIs. Right fielder
Lindsay Larabee (Westfield, MA/Westfield) was 3 for 3 with four RBIs and her first homer of the season. Catcher
Catherine Kielb (Rensselaer, NY/Columbia) added two hits in the 13 hit attack.
Union freshman pitcher
Lindsay Colvin (Medfield, MA/Medfield) held the Gators to five hits while striking out five to improve to 3-2 in her first season. Melissa McConville (Colonie, NY) took the loss in four innings of work. The Gators got one hit each from five different players.
In the second contest, Union got two hits each from Bordino, Kaknis, Kielb and freshman
Katie Letheren (Manchester, NH/Bishop Guertin). Kaknis his her fourth and fifth homers of the season and Union put six runs on the board in the third inning of the victory. Freshman pitcher
Ginny Sack (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills) remained perfect, as she now stands 4-0 after the four hitter. She struck out three on the day. McConville also pitched this game for Russell Sage, and gave up 12 hits while striking out two. Four different players had one hit each for the Gators, including freshman third baseman Dacia Shears (Johnson City, NY) and sophomore shortstop Maria Pasquarelli (Amsterdam, NY). Both those players had one hit each in the first game. Rogers had her hit streak snapped in this game for Union.
Union is at New Paltz Monday for a twinbill at 3 p.m., while Russell Sage will also play New Paltz on the road, Tuesday at 3 p.m.
